Go to March 28 1865

Portugal. Confederate Captain Thomas Jefferson Page of the CSS Stonewall planned to sail via Lisbon to Tenerife, and then on to Nassau. From there, the ironclad would aim to attack the Union fleet to raise the blockade. During the evening, CSS Stonewall was followed into Lisbon harbour by USS Niagara and USS Sacramento, which had trailed the raider from Corunna in Spain.

Alabama. Occupation of Canoe Station by Union forces under Major-General Frederick Steele. Steele’s troops approached Fort Blakely, five miles further north, after their long march from Pensacola, Florida..

Alabama. Union Major-General James Harrison Wilson’s cavalry expedition reached Jasper and began to cross the forks of the Black Warrior River, on their way to raid Selma.

Spanish Fort, Alabama. Despite the Union control of Mobile Bay, the city and port of Mobile remained in Confederate hands. Spanish Fort was nine miles east of the city and was heavily fortified as an eastern defence work. Fort Huger, Fort (Battery) Tracey, Fort (Battery) McDermott, Fort Alexis, Red Fort, and Old Spanish Fort were all part of the defences concentrating at the extensive Spanish Fort defences near the mouth of the Blakely River.
After concentrating his different columns at Danley’s Ferry, Union Major-General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby moved with XIII and XVI Corps along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, forcing the Confederates back to their defences at Spanish Fort. The Union army commenced a siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely. Confederate Major-General Dabney Herndon Maury reinforced the one brigade in Spanish Fort to 4,000 men. Six Union tinclad warships and other supporting gunboats steamed up the Blakely River to cut the communications between Mobile and Spanish Fort. The river was obstructed by torpedoes which required clearing operations ahead of the ironclads. These efforts were led by were directed by Commander Peirce Crosby of USS Metacomet and netted 150 torpedoes. Nevertheless, the next five days saw three Union warships sunk in the Blakely River.

Maryland. USS Wyoming was ordered to sail from Baltimore in search of the commerce raider CSS Shenandoah. The communications between the Pacific Ocean and the USA were slow and USS Wyoming was ordered to cruise between Melbourne, Australia, and China, but with little information to guide its course. CSS Shenandoah had departed Australia more than five weeks earlier and was now nearing Ascension Island in the Pacific Ocean. USS Wyoming reinforced USS Wachusett and USS Iroquois in a determined effort to detect the commerce raider.

South Carolina. A four-day Union expedition that had ventured fifty miles up the Waccamaw River to Conwayboro returned to Georgetown. USS Mingoe towed ten armed boats to Buck’s Mills and a steam launch and two large launches from the Santee River followed later with the steam tug Catalpa. The USS Mingoe ran ashore and was towed off by the tug. Although no Confederates troops were encountered, the interior of South Carolina was thrown into panic by the unexpected arrival of Union forces so far inland. The area had previously been ravaged by bands of Confederate deserters. The Union expedition of about 300 men and seven howitzers served to frighten the marauders from the region.

Tennessee. Union Major-General George Stoneman’s cavalry raiders approached the western border of North Carolina after spending a week on their journey from Knoxville through Morristown, Bull’s Gap, and Jonesboro. Orders were sent by Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson to divert Stoneman’s raid away from North Carolina and towards southwestern Virginia and Lynchburg, but it took several days for the message to reach Stoneman.

Virginia. Reconnaissance from Winchester to Woodstock began.

Virginia. Union Major-General Edward Otho Cresap Ord rejoined the Army of the Potomac with reinforcements returning from the expedition to North Carolina. These comprised two divisions from XXIV Corps (Brigadier-General Robert Sanford Foster’s 3rd Division and Brigadier-General John Wesley Turner’s Independent Division), and one division from XXV Corps (2nd Division of Major-General David Bell Birney). At the same time, Brigadier-General Charles Jackson Paine’s division (3/XXV) was attached to X Corps.

Virginia. Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived at City Point and met Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant for the first time since the spring of 1864. They began to plan the final campaigns of the war, having last met for this purpose a year earlier in Cincinnati, Ohio. US President Abraham Lincoln was already in City Point, consulting with Grant and inspecting the armies, and he joined in their discussions.
