Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign – South Carolina

CSA. Bowing to political pressure, Confederate President Jefferson Finis Davis accepted the resignation of the Confederate Secretary of War, James Alexander Seddon.

District of Columbia. The lawyer John S Rock of Boston was permitted to address the Supreme Court, the first black American to be admitted to practice before it.

District of Columbia. Union Major-General John McAllister Schofield’s XXIII Corps, awaiting sea transportation to Wilmington in North Carolina, was held up by ice in the Potomac River.

Florida. A Union boat expedition from USS Midnight, Acting Master John C Wells, landed to destroy salt works at St Andrews Bay over a four day period. This was the final expedition of the Union Navy to restrict the production of this vital commodity.

Georgia. Incident at McLemore’s Cove.

Georgia. Confederate General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard arrived at Augusta to organise the forces gathering for the defence of Georgia and the Carolinas. He arrived far ahead of the remnants of the Army of Tennessee that were making their way to join him by long and circuitous routes from Tupelo, Mississippi. Confederate Major-General Gustavus Woodson Smith had already collected 1,500 Georgia militiamen and 6,700 men of Major-General Joseph Wheeler’s Cavalry Corps at Augusta, and Beauregard placed these under the command of Major-General Daniel Harvey Hill. Wheeler’s cavalry comprised numerous depleted commands led by Brigadier-General William Young Conn Humes, Brigadier-General William Wirt Allen, Brigadier-General Robert Houston Anderson, Colonel Moses Wright Hannon, Brigadier-General James Hagan, Brigadier-General George Gibbs Dibrell, Brigadier-General Felix Huston Robertson, Brigadier-General Thomas Harrison, Colonel M S Ashby, and Colonel Charles Constantine Crews.

Idaho Territory. Operations against Indians around Fort Boise began.

Illinois. Illinois became the first state to ratify the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, abolishing slavery.

Kansas. Skirmish near Fort Zarah with Indians who attacked a Federal timber-cutting party.

Louisiana. Expedition from Fort Pike to Bayou Bonfouca ended.

Missouri. Union reconnaissances against guerrillas from Warrensburg to Tabo Creek, Dover, Oaklin Church, and Davis’ Creek began.

Missouri. Union reconnaissances against guerrillas from Warrensburg to Wagon Knob, Big Grove, Greenton, and Texas Prairie began.

South Carolina. Skirmish at Hickory Hill.

South Carolina. Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman commenced his Carolinas Campaign as his army crossed the Savannah River from Georgia into South Carolina. His original departure date was planned for early January but bad weather and floods had forced repeated deferrals. Sherman marched with 60,000 troops organised in much the same manner as he had advanced across Georgia, with one wing (Army of the Tennessee) commanded by Major-General Oliver Otis Howard and the other (“Army of Georgia”) by Major-General Henry Warner Slocum. Brigadier-General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick would protect the western flank with his 3^rd Cavalry Division.
The two columns were directed to feint towards Charleston and Augusta, Georgia, but their true objective was the State capital of Columbia in South Carolina. Beyond Columbia, the columns would feint again towards Chester and Charlotte, before heading in the direction of Cheraw, Fayetteville, and Goldsboro in North Carolina. Goldsboro had a railroad junction where Sherman planned to combine with Union Major-General John McAllister Schofield who would be marching inland from Wilmington and New Bern. The massed armies would then converge irresistibly on Raleigh with over 80,000 men. Union Rear Admiral John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren and Major-General John Gray Foster were already making feints and demonstrations along the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina to deceive the Confederates about Sherman’s intentions. The distance from Savannah to Raleigh was 425 miles and it would require the crossing of numerous rivers including the Savannah, Salkehatchie, Edisto, Congaree, Wateree, Pee Dee, Lumber, Cape Fear, and Neuse. A pioneer corps of 6,600 men was organised to carry out the incessant construction of bridges and corduroy roads to enable the army and its 2,500 wagons and 600 ambulances to maintain steady progress. Repair crews followed the advance to rebuild the railroad system.
The Union XV Corps (Major-General John Alexander Logan) and XVII Corps (Major-General Francis Preston Blair) were led by Howard through Pocataligo and then began a relentless march. Meanwhile, Slocum led the Union XIV Corps (Major-General Jefferson Columbus Davis) and XX Corps (Brigadier-General Alpheus Starkey Williams) across the Savannah River into South Carolina. Kilpatrick’s cavalry guarded their left flank by crossing over a pontoon bridge laid down at Sister’s Ferry. The troops were determined to repeat the devastation and depredations they had perfected in Georgia against the state they viewed as the originator of the war.

South Carolina. Confederate forces opposing the Union advance through the state were collected under Lieutenant-General William Joseph Hardee. The main elements were the divisions of Major-General Lafayette McLaws and Major-General Ambrose Ransom Wright, who commanded a combined force of about 8,000 men near Port Royal Sound. In addition, Confederate Brigadier-General William Booth Taliaferro had a force of 3,000 South Carolina militiamen at Charleston, and Major-General Matthew Calbraith Butler had 1,500 men in his cavalry division, which had recently arrived from the Army of Northern Virginia. Taliaferro subsequently took over Wright’s division when the latter was released from command to return to his home state of Georgia.

Tennessee. Union troops attacked and overran a Confederate camp in McLemore’s Cove near Ringgold.
