1865 August 2nd

August 2 1865 Wednesday

Pacific Ocean. Confederate Captain James Ireson Waddell, commanding the CSS Shenandoah, hailed the commander of the English bark Barracouta. Reading recent newspapers, he learned positively that the Civil War was over and that all armed resistance by the Confederate States had ceased. He disarmed his crew and dismounted his single gun. Rather than surrender the ship to the American authorities, he determined to complete a non-stop voyage of three months and 17,000 miles to Liverpool, England, via Cape Horn. The commerce raider had captured or destroyed 36 American ships in its 40,000-mile raiding cruise.
