USA. Union Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside had been relieved of command on 14 August 1864 after the Battle of the Crater and was sent on “extended leave”. A court of inquiry placed the blame for the Crater fiasco on Burnside and his subordinates. Burnside was not recalled to active duty but, in December 1864, Burnside met with President Abraham Lincoln and Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant to discuss his future. He was contemplating resignation, but Lincoln and Grant asked him to remain in the Army, but without an assignment to duty. Burnside remained firm in his intention and tendered his resignation as the seventh highest-ranking officer in the US Volunteers. The United States Congress Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War later exonerated Burnside and placed the blame for the Union defeat at the Crater on Major-General George Gordon Meade for mistakenly withdrawing the specially trained division of black troops from the assault and replacing them with unprepared soldiers.

District of Columbia. US President Abraham Lincoln died at 7:22 am, never having regained consciousness after being shot by John Wilkes Booth the night before while attending Ford’s Theatre in Washington. The US Secretary of War, Edwin McMasters Stanton, proclaimed pungently: “Now he belongs to the ages.” US Vice-President Andrew Johnson took the Oath of office as President at 10 am and assumed the Presidency of the United States.

District of Columbia. Union Commodore John Berrien Montgomery, Commandant of the Washington Navy Yard, was ordered to prepare an ironclad monitor to incarcerate the assassin of the President after they were apprehended. The US Marine Corps was designated to provide the prison guard.

Missouri. Skirmish at a Confederate guerrilla camp by McKenzie Creek near Patterson.

North Carolina. Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston waited at his headquarters in Hillsboro, forty miles northwest of Raleigh, for a reply from Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman to his request for a temporary suspension of hostilities.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A Union brigade, commanded by Colonel Smith Dykins Atkins, moved to New Hope Church about eight miles east of Chapel Hill. When they arrived at a swollen stream, they encountered some Confederate soldiers on the opposite bank. The Confederates had destroyed the only bridge across the stream the day before and left a small detachment and a few artillery pieces to harass the Union advance. Atkins decided to split his force with 100 troops staying in place and the majority moving further upstream to rebuild a bridge across the stream. They managed to drive off the Confederate detachment, permitting the Union engineers to rebuild the bridge.

North Carolina. Confederate President Jefferson Finis Davis left Greensboro on horseback. He and the remaining members of the Confederate government and party rode on horses or in carriages.

South Carolina. Expedition to The Santee River began.

South Carolina. Skirmish near Statesburg.

Virginia. Reconnaissance in Pocohontas County and Randolph County began.

Virginia. Confederate Brigadier-General William Lowther Jackson disbanded his brigade in the Shenandoah Valley rather than submit to surrender.

West Virginia. Reconnaissance in Bath County and Highland County began.
