USA. Following the sequence of victories that bolstered the Presidential re-election campaign of Abraham Lincoln, former Major-General John Charles Frémont withdrew his candidacy for the presidential nomination of the Republican Party.
Alabama. Confederate Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest’s expedition left Florence and aimed for the Tennessee & Alabama Railroad, forty miles further to the east. The railroad was one of the lines supplying Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman in Georgia and Forrest intended to break it at Athens.
Arkansas. Reconnaissance from Helena to Alligator Bayou began.
Mississippi. Expedition to Natchez, Buck’s Ferry, and Farrar’s Plantation ended.
Mississippi. Skirmish at Rolling Fork.
Missouri. Confederate guerrillas raided and burned the town of Carthage.
Missouri. Skirmish six miles north of Longwood.
Missouri. Skirmish at Patterson.
Missouri. Skirmish at Sikestown
Missouri. Incident at Centralia.
North Carolina. Unaware that Union Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut had requested leave because of failing health, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles requested Farragut to take command of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron for the attack on Wilmington, the last major port open to the Confederates. Welles regarded its capture as of more practical importance than the capture of Richmond. After learning of Farragut’s indisposition, Welles selected Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter to prepare and lead the naval assault against the Confederacy’s most important remaining seaport.
Tennessee. The 1st Division of Union XVI Corps under Brigadier-General John Wallace Fuller was transferred to join XVII Corps and renamed as 1st Division (XVII Corps) at Atlanta.
Virginia. Skirmish at Milford.
Fisher’s Hill, Virginia. Confederate Lieutenant-General Jubal Anderson Early’s army occupied strong natural positions at Fisher’s Hill overlooking Strasburg Virginia. His force was already weakened by casualties sustained at Opequon Creek and he was further weakened when Major-General John Cabell Breckinridge and his division were ordered to move to oppose Union advances in southwestern Virginia. Early stretched his line along four miles of Tumbling Run between the North Fork of the Shenandoah River and Little North Mountain. Major-General Lunsford Lindsay Lomax’s dismounted cavalry division held the left flank nearer the Mountain with infantry divisions under Major-General Stephen Dodson Ramseur, Brigadier-General John Pegram, Major-General John Brown Gordon, and Brigadier-General Gabriel Colvin Wharton extending the line from left to right as far as Fisher’s Hill.
To avoid a costly frontal assault, Union Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan ordered Brigadier-General George Crook’s Army of West Virginia to move secretly to concealed positions on the northern side of North Mountain. Crook left before dawn, but his flank march was difficult and took the entire day to complete. Meanwhile, the Union VI Corps and XIX Corps advanced frontally along Tumbling Run and pinned the Confederate infantry in position with the threat of a frontal attack in force. Crook finally attacked with his two divisions at about 4 pm, not long before sunset. Lomax’s dismounted cavalry was surprised and offered little resistance. Ramseur tried to refuse the left flank of his division to oppose this threat. The frontal attack was then unleashed against the shaky Confederate line. Union Brigadier-General James Brewerton Ricketts’ division (3/VI) linked up with Crook and the advancing Union troops made an irresistible charge, despite the difficult uphill terrain and the barrier of Tumbling Run. More Union divisions crossed the creek and joined the advance one at a time from west to east as the Confederate line became unhinged and finally collapsed.
The Confederates lost twelve guns and their crews on Fisher’s Hill after they were abandoned by their supporting infantry. Four more guns were picked up along the road and were added to the haul of a thousand prisoners. Sheridan unleashed the cavalry division of Brigadier-General William Woods Averell to complete the rout with an energetic pursuit, but Averell’s troopers were already in bivouac for fear of encountering the Confederate rearguard in the darkness. Averell soon paid the price for his caution by being relieved of command.
Union Brigadier-General Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert’s cavalry performed no better. His two divisions rode up the Luray Valley in order to break into the Confederate rear. Twelve miles beyond Front Royal they encountered Confederate Major-General Fitzhugh Lee’s two cavalry brigades. Torbert’s 6,000 cavalrymen were deterred at Milford by just 1,200 men under Brigadier-General Williams Carter Wickham. Torbert wanted to avoid a reckless advance and withdrew without attacking, thereby failing in his mission of cutting off the Confederate retreat. Early escaped the possible encirclement, and retreated through New Market and Mount Jackson. He later continued further with his remnants to Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro. The Confederates reported losses of over 1,235 men from 9,500 engaged although a more accurate estimate was nearer 1,400, including 1,100 prisoners. The Union army reported 528 casualties (with only 52 men killed) from 29,444. (CWSAC Major Battle Union Victory)
