Johnsonville, TN

Siege of Petersburg

Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign

Hood’s Operations in Northern Alabama

Price’s Missouri Raid

Azores. CSS Shenandoah, Lieutenant James I Waddell, captured and scuttled the bark Alina south of the Azores and due west of Dakar. Alina was on her maiden voyage and was CSS Shenandoah’s first prize.

Alabama. Skirmish at at Muscle Shoals (Raccoon Ford) near Florence.

Alabama. The Confederate Army of Tennessee reached Tuscumbia from Decatur. They expected to obtain a supply of twenty days of rations, but found the depot was depleted. Nevertheless, Lieutenant-General Stephen Dill Lee’s Corps was ordered to cross the Tennessee River at Florence. Major-General Edward Johnson’s Division had crossed by the evening and occupied Florence on the north bank. The remainder of the army remained in camp at Tuscumbia while Lee’s Corps spent three days completing the crossing. The Army stayed in the vicinity until 21 November, while it gathered sufficient supplies for future operations.

Alabama. Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman decided to discontinue his pursuit of the unpredictable Confederate Army of Tennessee at Gaylesville, thirty miles from Gadsden. Sherman ordered Major-General John Schofield and XXIII Corps (Major-General Jacob Dolson Cox) to reinforce Major-General George Henry Thomas at Nashville, Tennessee. He had already started IV Corps under Major-General David Sloan Stanley towards Nashville 25 October. He summoned Major-General Andrew Jackson Smith and his two well-travelled divisions to come from Missouri to join the troops concentrating at Nashville. He expected the existing garrisons in Tennessee and these reinforcements to give Thomas twice as many men as the Confederate invaders. Thomas strengthened his garrisons at Murfreesboro and Chattanooga in Tennessee, and at Athens and Florence in Alabama, while he collected new recruits and recalled to detachments to Nashville for his main army. The remainder of Sherman’s army started back from Gaylesville towards Atlanta, Georgia.

Georgia. Incident at Atlanta.

Georgia. Sherman reinforced Brigadier-General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick’s cavalry division up to a strength of 3,500 well-mounted troopers. Kilpatrick’s cavalry division was to accompany the force in Georgia while all the other cavalry divisions were sent back towards Tennessee. They were to be reorganised in Nashville by a new commander, Brigadier-General James Harrison Wilson, who had just been assigned to command the Cavalry Corps of the Military District of the Mississippi.

Kentucky. Capture of Fort Heiman.

Missouri. Incidents at Cane Creek, Newtonia, and Franklin.

North Carolina. Union Commander David B Macomb resumed his advance towards Plymouth, avoiding the obstructed route of the Roanoke River. His fleet of six gunboats approached via the Middle River to attack the city and its defences from above. The gunboats spent the entire day in navigating the difficult channels and shelling the Confederate works at long range.

Tennessee. Skirmish at Bainbridge.

Johnsonville, Tennessee. Confederate batteries from the command of Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest engaged USS Undine, Acting Master Bryant, and the transports Venus and Cheeseman near Johnsonville on the Tennessee River. USS Undine had convoyed the transport Anna below Sandy Island and was returning upstream when the sound of artillery was heard further down the Tennessee. USS Undine came about to investigate and was attacked by a battery of several guns and volleys of musketry near Paris Landing. While USS Undine was engaging the Confederates, the transport Venus steamed down the river and passed the batteries to join in the engagement. About twenty minutes later, the transport Cheeseman also came down the river, but was immediately disabled and captured. USS Undine continued to fire on the batteries for nearly three hours when her ammunition was nearly exhausted and her engine disabled. Unable to resist further, the crew attempted to destroy the vessel, but it was captured intact, along with the two transports and two barges. A supply of 9,000 shoes and 1,000 blankets were welcome booty for the Confederates. The steamer Anna sank before reaching Paducah. The Union commanders were forced to halt all unescorted sailings up the Tennessee River, interrupting their most convenient supply line to Georgia. Forrest continued down the Tennessee River to join Brigadier-General Abraham Buford, who had devised an ingenious trap to strike at the Union gunboats operating on the river.
