Sheridan’s Richmond Raid

USA. US President Abraham Lincoln ordered the Union Army and US Navy not to interfere with legitimate trade with former Confederate ports, where it was being conducted according to US Treasury Department guidelines. This was an early step to normalising commerce and led to the gradual suspension of the blockade at occupied ports.

Alabama. The Confederate ironclad CSS Tennessee steamed across Mobile Bay and took its station behind Fort Morgan, from where it could oppose any attempt by the Union to enter the bay. It was also well placed to break out among the blockading squadron if the opportunity should arise.

Arkansas. Skirmish at Stony Point.

Georgia. Skirmish at Cartersville near the Etowah River.

Georgia. Skirmish at Allatoona Mill.

Georgia. The Confederate Army of Tennessee evacuated its lines at Cassville and crossed the Etowah River overnight. They marched overnight through Cartersville and found new positions four miles south of the river near Allatoona Pass. Confederate Lieutenant-General John Bell Hood’s Corps and Lieutenant-General Leonidas Polk’s Corps led the way, while Lieutenant-General William Joseph Hardee’s Corps formed the rear guard. Johnston positioned his army in the morning on a commanding ridge on either side of Allatoona Pass. The troops started building breastworks to dominate the steep, narrow gorge through which the Western & Atlantic Railroad snaked south-eastwards. This was a strong defensive position, protected on the left by Pumpkin Vine Creek, and on the right by Allatoona Creek. Confederate Major-General Joseph Wheeler was alerted to deploy extensive cavalry screens to the west and east along the Etowah River, in order to warn of any attempts to turn this powerful position.

Georgia. Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman occupied the abandoned Confederate positions around Kingston and Cassville and allowed a three-day rest for his armies. His experience as a young officer stationed at Marietta twenty years earlier meant that he predicted that the Confederates would fall back to the seemingly impregnable ridge at Allatoona Pass. Rather than advancing and attacking recklessly, he decided to rest and re-supply his troops while he prepared another outflanking manoeuvre. For the next stage of his advance, Sherman decided to abandon the line of the railroad and strike westwards for Dallas, following a less direct route towards Atlanta. Behind the army, Colonel W W Wright and the 2,000 workers of the US Military Railroad rebuilt the Resaca Bridge and restored the Western & Atlantic Railroad to Kingston.

Georgia. The Union division of Major-General Peter Joseph Osterhaus (1/XV) joined the advancing armies in northern Georgia. It comprised the 1^st Brigade under Brigadier-General Charles Robert Woods, the 2^nd Brigade under Colonel James Alexander Williamson, and the 3^rd Brigade under Colonel Henry Wangelin.

Kentucky. Skirmish near Mayfield.

Louisiana. Retreat to Morganza and Alexandria ended.

Louisiana. Incident at Rapides Bayou.

Louisiana. Union Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks’ army completed its crossing of the Atchafalaya River at Simsport and dismantled the bridge of boats behind it. The Confederates of Major-General Richard Taylor were unable to cross to continue their pursuit. Despite Banks’ failure and his well-founded fears of being dismissed, his political significance saved him from immediate removal from command. The solution for Union command in the Trans-Mississippi was to create a higher level of command above Banks’ Department of the Gulf because Banks was currently the second highest-ranking major-General of US Volunteers. This solution took the form of the Military Division of West Mississippi under Major-General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby. Canby met Banks at Simsport and accompanied him on the hundred-mile march from there to Donaldsonville. After assessing the outcomes of the Red River campaign, Canby reduced Banks to a primarily administrative role while Canby took over the active field command in the region.
The entire Red River Campaign had cost 5,245 Union casualties in the army and over 300 men in the accompanying fleet. In addition, one ironclad warship, two tinclad warships, three transports, two pump boats, and twenty-eight guns, had been lost for negligible gain. Confederate losses totalled about 4,275 men but Texas and the Red River had been retained for the Confederacy.

Mississippi. Skirmish at Greenville.

Missouri. Confederates attacked a Union outpost at Lamar.

Virginia. Incidents at Spotsylvania Court House, Milford Station, Downey’s Bridge, and Drewry’s Bluff.

Virginia. Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant and the Army of the Potomac left the lines at Spotsylvania Court House in an attempt to outflank Confederate General Robert Edward Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Grant ordered Major-General George Gordon Meade to cross the Mattaponi River and to slide southwards past Lee’s lines towards Richmond. Union Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock’s II Corps marched far ahead of the main body, reinforced for the operation and preceded by strong cavalry forces.
Hancock’s column set out at 10 pm and their overnight march followed the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad towards Hanover Junction. When they reached Milford Station, II Corps would adopt a position on the west bank of the Mattaponi River and engage the Confederates wherever encountered. Grant was hoping that Lee would take the bait of spotting an isolated Union Corps and attack it, thereby drawing the Confederates out into the open where they could be engaged outside their entrenchments.
Union cavalry forces under Brigadier-General Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert drove out a small force of Confederate infantry at Milford Station. Efforts had been made to keep the march secret for as long as possible but the Confederate cavalry under Major-General Wade Hampton soon warned Lee of this movement. Lee realised that this was the beginning of another Union attempt to turn his right flank and to interpose between his own army and Richmond. Lee had already selected Hanover Junction just beyond the North Anna River as his next point of convergence, and he alerted his three Corps commanders to be ready to move at a moment’s notice. By nightfall, he was convinced of the Union change of position and ordered Lieutenant-General Richard Stoddert Ewell to lead the movement of his troops to the south bank of the Po River at dawn. Ewell was required to beat the Union army to Hanover Junction. Lee declined the opportunity to strike a blow while on the move, preferring to occupy and fortify a new position rather than take the bait offered by Grant.
Lee was encouraged by news from the Shenandoah Valley and the Richmond front that the Union advances in both of those sectors had been halted or neutralised. He called for reinforcements from Major-General John Cabell Breckinridge in the Valley and General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard at Richmond to be sent by rail to strengthen his new position at Hanover Junction.

Ware Bottom Church, Virginia. The Confederates continued to construct the Howlett Line, effectively bottling up the Union forces in the peninsula at Bermuda Hundred. General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard attacked Major-General Benjamin Franklin Butler’s line near Ware Bottom Church to secure his position. The Confederates drove back the advanced pickets and rifle pits of Brigadier-General Adelbert Ames (1/XVIII) and Brigadier-General Alfred Howe Terry (1/X). Ames could not recover his position but Colonel Joshua Blackwood Howell’s brigade, reinforced by the 6^th Connecticut Infantry and 143^rd New York Infantry from Brigadier-General John Wesley Turner’s division, regained their positions with a loss of 712 men. This Confederate success shortened the line and allowed Beauregard to send reinforcements from the Howlett Line to join the main army north of Richmond. Beauregard was ordered to send 6,000 men to reinforce the Army of Northern Virginia. Five brigades were sent, four in the division of Major-General George Edward Pickett, and one of the brigades sent earlier from South Carolina. Beauregard organised his remaining troops into two divisions under Major-General Robert Frederick Hoke and Brigadier-General Bushrod Rust Johnson, leaving Hoke in local command while he resumed his wider responsibilities in southern Virginia and North Carolina. This battle effectively sealed the Union Army of the James “in a bottle” until 16 June, when the Confederates had to withdraw to defend Petersburg. (CWSAC Formative Battle – Confederate Victory)

Virginia. Confederate Lieutenant-Colonel John Singleton Mosby failed to capture a Union wagon train near Strasburg, but it was nevertheless prevented from bringing supplies to Union Major-General David Hunter.
