Alabama. Skirmish at Madison Station.
Alabama. After encountering many difficulties and setbacks Confederate Admiral Franklin Buchanan finally succeeded in floating the ironclad ram CSS Tennessee over the bar of Dog River Bar and into Mobile Bay. The ship was 200 feet long and nearly 50 feet in the beam. Its iron armour was six inches thick, backed by two feet of oak and pine. Six 6.4-inch and 7-inch Brooke rifles were mounted, two on pivots fore and aft and two mounted on each broadside. Its engines were salvaged from a river steamboat and produced a maximum speed of just six knots. The steering chains were exposed on the upper rear deck and this was a weakness that had not been corrected. A novel steam spray was attached to the boilers for the purpose of scalding and repelling boarders.
The ship’s captain was Lieutenant James D Johnston CSN and its crew was made up of Tennessee infantry volunteers who were learning the craft of seamen. Confederate Admiral Franklin Buchanan added three small paddle-wheel gunboats to escort the monster. The CSS Morgan and CSS Gaines each carried six guns and CSS Selma had four guns. The escorts carried no armour except for some protection around their boilers.
Arkansas. Confederate reconnaissance in northern Arkansas by Brigadier-General Joseph Orville Shelby began.

Georgia. Skirmish at Rome.
Georgia. Confederate Major-General Stephen Dill Lee sent word to General Joseph Eggleston Johnston that a cavalry raid, to be led by Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest into middle Tennessee, was due to begin within three days. The aim was to disrupt Union supplies and communications and divert Union forces away from the campaign in northern Georgia.
Adairsville, Georgia. Failing to find a good defensive position south of Calhoun, Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston’s army retreated southward towards Adairsville while Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman’s three armies pursued them from Calhoun. Johnston continued on to Adairsville while the Confederate cavalry fought continual rearguard actions. Skirmishing continued throughout the day and into the early evening.
Union Major-General James Birdseye McPherson’s Army of the Tennessee moved to the far right, Major-General George Henry Thomas’ Army of the Cumberland followed the line of the railroad in the centre, and Major-General John McAllister Schofield’s Army of the Ohio moved on the left.
Union Major-General Oliver Otis Howard’s IV Corps ran into the entrenched infantry of Major-General Benjamin Franklin Cheatham’s division of Lieutenant-General William Joseph Hardee’s Corps in its rearguard position about two miles north of Adairsville. The 44th Illinois Infantry and 24th Wisconsin Infantry (under the command of Major Arthur MacArthur) attacked Major-General Benjamin Franklin Cheatham’s division at Robert Saxon House, also known as the Octagon House, and incurred heavy losses. Three Union divisions prepared for battle, but Thomas halted them due to the approach of darkness. While Thomas’ army was the closest pursuer of the Confederate retreat down the Western & Atlantic Railroad, Sherman’s other columns were converging rapidly from east and west. Schofield’s army reached Sallacoa six miles to the east of Adairsville, and McPherson’s army was at McGuire, six miles to the west of the town. Sherman began to concentrate his armies towards Adairsville for an attack on Johnston in the morning.
Johnston had originally expected to find a valley at Adairsville of suitable width to deploy his men, and to anchor his line with both flanks on hills. The valley was found to be too wide for this plan so Johnston withdrew again towards Kingston.
As Johnston fell back, however, he devised a new plan that he hoped would lead to the destruction of at least part of Sherman’s forces. There were two roads leading from Adairsville, one south to Kingston and the other southeast to Cassville. It seemed likely that Sherman would have to divide his armies and use both roads. This would give Johnston an opportunity to attack one column in detail before the other could come across the rugged country to its aid.
The Confederates abandoned Adairsville during the night Hardee’s Corps headed to Kingston, while his other two Corps under Lieutenant-General John Bell Hood and Lieutenant-General Leonidas Polk marched toward Cassville. He predicted that Sherman would assume that most of the Confederates were moving to Kingston and the Etowah River, and would, therefore, concentrate the bulk of his forces in that direction. Hardee’s Corps would hold up this advance at Kingston while Johnston, with Polk’s Corps and Hood’s Corps, destroyed the Union column marching on the Cassville road.

Louisiana. Skirmish at Moreauville.
Louisiana. Skirmishes at Old Oaks, Twelve Mile Bayou, Alexandria, and Bayou de Glaize.
Yellow Bayou, Louisiana, also known as Norwood’s Plantation. Union Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks continued his retreat down the Red River and skirmished continuously with Confederate cavalry on either side of Moreauville. They marched onwards to Yellow Bayou within five miles of Simsport and the Atchafalaya River. Once across that river, Banks would be shielded from the continuous Confederate harassment but he had to wait until the army engineers could construct a bridge over the swollen river. He was unaware that throughout the retreat that the Confederate attacks were no more than harassment and never posed a serious threat. Banks had five times as many men as the pursuers of Confederate Major-General Richard Taylor. Taylor waited desperately for the return of the three infantry divisions sent to Arkansas to turn back the Union advance to Camden in order to have enough strength to attack and not just harass the enemy column. When Taylor learned that the Union army had stalled at Yellow Bayou, he resolved to at least try to inflict a defeat on part of the Union force while it was divided part-way across the Atchafalaya.

Virginia. Incidents at Spotsylvania Court House, Malvern Hill, Bottom’s Church, and Jones’ Bridge.
Virginia. Skirmish at Waterford in Loudoun County. Confederate Lieutenant-Colonel John Singleton Mosby and the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry attacked an independent cavalry company of Virginians who had joined the Union. The Unionists lost nine casualties.
Virginia. Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant persisted in his efforts to outflank Confederate General Robert Edward Lee’s forces at Spotsylvania Court House. The II Corps and VI Corps of the Army of the Potomac made good progress until nightfall towards his own left flank while six divisions moved into the abandoned Mule Shoe salient on the weakened Confederate left flank. They were ordered to attack at dawn at 4 am, using their numerical superiority to overwhelm their opponents. Their movement was detected by Confederate cavalry and by observers in the tower of Spotsylvania Church and the Confederates were prepared for the attack.
Virginia. Union Major-General Franz Sigel’s force abandoned Strasburg and crossed to the north bank of Cedar Creek in the morning.
Virginia. Union Major-General Philip Sheridan’s Cavalry Corps began a week-long ride from the James River to rejoin the Army of the Potomac.
Virginia. Union Major-General Benjamin Franklin Butler’s Army of the James reoccupied the works extending across the Bermuda Hundred peninsula after withdrawing overnight from Drewry’s Bluff. Confederate General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard followed up and began to build his own entrenchments facing Butler’s line, effectively sealing the supine Union troops in a secure trap. Beauregard was disappointed that his plan to defeat Butler had failed, but he had nevertheless “corked” the Union Army of the James in a bottle. Butler could not be driven out of Bermuda Hundred, but neither could he break out.
West Virginia. Union Brigadier-General William Woods Averell and Brigadier-General George Crook spent two days crossing the Greenbrier River at Union and headed for Meadow Bluff.
