June 21 1864 Tuesday
Battle of Jerusalem Plank Road, VA
Atlanta Campaign – Kennesaw
Siege of PetersburgSheridan’s Trevilian Raid
Kautz’s and Wilson’s Southern Virginia Raid
CSA. Confederate President Jefferson Finis Davis reluctantly accepted the resignation of Confederate Secretary of the Treasury, Christopher G Memminger, following severe criticism of Memminger’s handling of the Confederate Treasury.
Georgia. Incidents at Powder Springs and Noonday Creek.
Georgia. Confederate Joseph Eggleston Johnston had correctly anticipated Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman’s movement to turn his right flank and countered by moving one of his three corps, under Lieutenant-General John Bell Hood, from its reserve position near Marietta further to the south and west along Powder Springs Road. Hood formed his line in the vicinity of Mount Zion Church. Carried out in a heavy thunderstorm, this precautionary move extended the Confederate left far enough to block Sherman’s attempted turning movement in that sector. Sherman was drawn inexorably to the conclusion that only a frontal attack would dislodge the Confederates from Kennesaw Mountain.
Maryland. Expedition to Point Lookout ended.
Tennessee. Skirmish in Decatur County.
Virginia. Expedition to Pope’s Creek ended.
Virginia. Incidents at Black Creek (Tunstall Station).
Virginia. Skirmish at White House (St Peter’s Church).
Virginia. Skirmish at Catawba Mountain.
Virginia. Skirmish at Salem.
Virginia. Skirmish at Howlett’s (Hewlett’s) Bluff.
Virginia. US President Abraham Lincoln toured the Petersburg siege lines on horseback with Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant. They discussed the costly overland campaign from the Rapidan to the James, but Lincoln desisted from open admonition, leaving Grant to determine his own strategy. Lincoln inspected a parade of the black troops from Brigadier-General Edward Ward Hinks’ division (3/XVIII) and “the Great Emancipator was cheered to the heavens”.
Virginia. USS Shokokon, Acting Master William B Sheldon, broke up an artillery attack on the Union transport Eliza Hancox at Cumberland Point.
Virginia. Returning from his raid along the Virginia Central Railroad, Union Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan’s cavalry expedition crossed the Pamunkey River. They broke through the Confederate cordon at St Peter’s Church and led their train of 900 supply wagons toward the James River. Sheridan kept these two cavalry divisions north of the James River at White House. He was required to divert the Confederate cavalry divisions of Major-General Wade Hampton and Major-General Fitzhugh Lee and to keep them north of the James.
Virginia. Union Brigadier-General James Harrison Wilson’s cavalry division was ordered forward from City Point to join that of Brigadier-General August Valentine Kautz. They planned an extended raid to destroy the railroads and lines of communication leading into Petersburg. If Union Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan’s diversion along the Virginia Central Railroad had succeeded, Wilson and Kautz expected to face only one Confederate cavalry division under Major-General William Henry Fitzhugh Lee.
Virginia. The Confederates began a long-range bombardment of the Union naval squadron in the James River at Trent’s Reach and Varina Reach. The Confederate flotilla was commanded by Commander John K Mitchell in the ironclad CSS Virginia II. It included the ironclad ram CSS Fredericksburg, Commander Rootes, and the gunboats CSS Hampton, Lieutenant John S Maury, CSS Nansemond, Lieutenant Charles W Hayes, and CSS Drewry, Lieutenant William H Hall, along with the small steamer CSS Roanoke, Lieutenant Mortimer M Beton, and the tug Beaufort, Lieutenant Joseph Gardner. The ironclad ram CSS Richmond, Lieutenant W H Parker, intended to join the bombardment but struggled to get underway and had to be towed upriver to a position near the obstructions below Richmond. An engine failure in CSS Virginia II could not be repaired until the afternoon when it was too late for it to move farther downstream to engage at a more effective range. Union gunboats and monitors and the Union batteries onshore joined in the exchange but neither fleet suffered serious damage.
Jerusalem Plank Road, Virginia. After the direct assaults of the previous week had failed to capture Petersburg, Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant reluctantly decided to embark on a gradual envelopment of the city and General Robert Edward Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The Union Army of the Potomac and Army of the James entrenched east of the city, with their lines running from near the Jerusalem Plank Road to the Appomattox River.
Grant’s primary objective was to sever the three remaining open rail lines that served Petersburg and the Confederate capital of Richmond. These were the Richmond & Petersburg Railroad running north, the South Side Railroad leading to Lynchburg in the west, and the Petersburg & Weldon Railroad, which led south to Weldon and the Confederacy’s only remaining major port of Wilmington, North Carolina.
Grant decided to launch a wide-ranging cavalry raid against the South Ride and Weldon railroads, but he also directed that a significant infantry force be sent against the Weldon Railroad, at a point nearer to his current position. Union Major-General George Gordon Meade selected the II Corps and VI Corps for the task. The II Corps was temporarily commanded by Major-General David Bell Birney and VI Corps by Major-General Horatio Gouverneur Wright. The plan of attack was for both the II Corps and VI Corps to cross the Jerusalem Plank Road and then to pivot northwest, about two miles beyond it, to reach the railroad. The positions in the trench lines vacated by these two corps were to be occupied by units of the Army of the James that would across from Bermuda Hundred.
The leading elements of II Corps probed toward the Weldon railroad and skirmished with Confederate cavalry. The difficult terrain of swamps and dense thickets slowed the advance of both Union Corps as they pivoted northwest for the two-mile march to reach the railroad. A gap opened up between them and the VI Corps encountered troops from Confederate Major-General Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox’s division of Lieutenant-General Ambrose Powell Hill’s Corps. Unexpectedly meeting this infantry opposition, VI Corps halted and began to entrench prematurely. Confederate Brigadier-General William Mahone, commanding another of Hill’s divisions, observed that the gap between the two Union corps was widening as Birney still pushed on while Wright halted. Mahone had been a railroad engineer before the war and had personally surveyed this area south of Petersburg, so he was familiar with a ravine that could be used to hide the approach of a Confederate attack column through the vulnerable gap. General Robert Edward Lee approved Mahone’s plan to attack along the ravine for the following day.
West Virginia. Union Major-General David Hunter’s retreating column from Lynchburg reached Salem. Confederate Brigadier-General John McCausland attacked Hunter’s trains and artillery at New Castle Road, capturing three guns and spiking five more before withdrawing.
