CSA: Brigadier-General William Montgomery Gardner was appointed to command all Confederate military prisons east of the Mississippi, except for those in Georgia and Alabama.

Kentucky. Union expedition from Paducah to Haddix’s Ferry aboard the steamer Olive.

Missouri. Reconnaissance In Johnson County began.

Missouri. Confederate raiders attacked Shelbina, destroying railroad tracks and two trains of railroad cars.

Tennessee. Skirmish at White’s Station.

Virginia. Union reconnaissance to Rapidan Station.

Virginia. Union Brigadier-General George Crook’s army retreated from its defeat at Winchester down the Shenandoah Valley to the Potomac River. They began to cross into Maryland near Williamsport.

Virginia. During the night, the Union II Corps and two divisions of Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan’s cavalry, under the command of Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock, crossed to the north side of James River at Deep Bottom to threaten Richmond. This was a diversionary manoeuvre to draw Confederate troops away from new attacks being prepared south of the James.
