Siege of Atlanta

Siege of Petersburg

Alabama. Reconnaissance to Florence ended.

Alabama. Expedition from Decatur to Courtland and Moulton began.

Alabama. Expedition to Pollard ended.

Alabama. Skirmishes at Courtland and Flint River.

Alabama. Boats from USS Hartford, USS Monongahela, and USS Sebago, commanded by Lieutenant J C Watson, scouted Mobile Bay in an attempt to discover the type and number of water mines and torpedoes laid by the Confederates off Fort Morgan. They located and cut loose many of the torpedoes and found that a large number had been rendered inoperative by the water.

Arkansas. Reconnaissance to Searcy and West Point began.

Arkansas. Reconnaissance in Yell County began.

Arkansas. Operation in White River began.

Arkansas. Skirmish at Benton.

Dakota Territory. Expedition to James River began.

Dakota Territory. Expedition against the Sioux began.

Florida. Expedition to Barrancas ended. Incident at Trail Ridge.

Georgia. Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman completed the investment of Atlanta on the northern and western sides and commenced the planning for a new series of operations to cut the railroads running into Atlanta from the south and west. The Confederate defenders of Atlanta counted around 37,000 infantry and 5,000 militiamen to oppose about 85,000 infantrymen in Sherman’s three armies.

Georgia. Union army engineers completed a railroad bridge 760 feet long and 90 feet high over the Chattahoochee River. Track was laid to bring supplies right to the rear of the Army of the Cumberland investing Atlanta from the north.

Louisiana. Skirmish near Benton’s Ferry, seven miles from the Amite River.

Maryland. Skirmish at Williamsport.

Mississippi. Incident at Tupelo.

Missouri. Reconnaissance from Fulton began.

Missouri. Incident at Pleasant Hill.

North Carolina. Union Acting Master’s Mate John Woodman USN and three companions made the first of three reconnaissance expeditions up the Roanoke River to Plymouth. The intelligence they gathered was used to prepare an attack on the ironclad CSS Albemarle. The ironclad ram was found at the wharf near the steam sawmill. The danger posed by the ironclad prevented the Union forces from aggressive operations in the Plymouth area and it had to be neutralised.

Tennessee. Reconnaissance to Pulaski ended.

Tennessee. USS Undine, Acting Master John L Bryant, struck a snag and sank in the Tennessee River near Clifton. Efforts began immediately to raise the small gunboat while guns were put ashore to help defend the city from Confederate troops.

Virginia. Incident at Deep Bottom

Virginia. Skirmishes at Snicker’s Gap and Kernstown.

West Virginia. Skirmishes at Bunker Hill and Martinsburg.
