Stoneman’s Georgia Raid

Mobile Bay Operations – Siege of Fort Gaines

Alabama. A force of 2,000 Union troops under Major-General Gordon Granger landed overnight at the western end of Dauphin Island. They moved eastwards and prepared to lay siege to Fort Gaines at the eastern end of the island. This landing was the vanguard of 5,500 men from XIII Corps who would be made available for operations on the Gulf coast.

Fort Morgan, Alabama. The entrance to Mobile Bay was protected by the Confederate fortifications at Fort Gaines, Fort Morgan, and Fort Powell. Forts Gaines and Morgan covered the entrance from the Gulf of Mexico and Fort Powell guarded the channel from Mississippi Sound. The defence of the bay was strengthened by pile obstructions and torpedo (naval mine) fields. The Confederate defences were commanded by Major-General Dabney Herndon Maury with Brigadier-General Richard Lucian Page in local charge at Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan. Admiral Franklin Buchanan commanded the ironclad warship CSS Tennessee and three wooden gunboats.

The Union commanders wished to take Mobile before additional ironclads were built by the Confederates to further strengthen its defences. Union Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut delayed his naval attack on Mobile Bay in order to await the arrival from Pensacola, Florida, of the fourth of his ironclad monitors, the USS Tecumseh. The admiral almost decided to proceed with only three ironclad monitors because the army was already ashore on Dauphin Island. However, he delayed his attack until the fleet was fully assembled. This delay allowed the Confederates to rush additional forces to garrison Fort Gaines. Meanwhile, Union Lieutenant J C Watson USN and his boat crew made a final night expedition into the waters of Mobile Bay under the guns of Fort Morgan to deactivate and sink Confederate torpedoes in the channel leading into Mobile Bay.

Arkansas. Reconnaissance to Gunter’s Mills and Independence Road ended.

Arkansas. Incident at Dardanelle.

Colorado Territory. Incident at Julesburg.

Florida. Union Captain Percival Drayton urged the senior officer at Pensacola, Captain Thornton A Jenkins, to hurry the ironclad USS Tecumseh immediately to Mobile, Alabama, for the impending attack.

Georgia. Incidents at East Point, Jonesboro, Triune, and Flint River Station.

Georgia. Skirmish at Mulberry Creek.

Georgia. The Union XIV Corps was temporarily attached to Major-General John McAllister Schofield’s Army of the Ohio for the impending offensive along Utoy Creek. Schofield planned to force a crossing with two divisions at the north fork of Utoy Creek by the bend near Herring’s (or Heron’s) Mill. Once across, he planned to follow up quickly with the rest of his force.

During the morning, Brigadier-General Milo Smith Hascall’s division (2/XXIII) crossed at the mill against light opposition and occupied a hill to the north and east. Union Brigadier-General Absalom Baird’s division (3/XIV) was supposed to secure the bridgehead by moving onto Hascall’s right but he did not cross the creek until personally ordered by Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman. Baird was complying with the prior instructions of the XIV Corps commander, Major-General John McAuley Palmer, not to accept orders from Schofield. Palmer doubted Schofield’s seniority and questioned his subordination to Schofield’s command. The only solution was for Sherman to step in and issue the orders personally.

Jug Tavern, Georgia, also known as Mulberry Creek. Union Colonel Horace Capron’s cavalry brigade, which had formed part of Major-General George Stoneman’s ill-fated raid to Macon, was surprised at Jug Tavern, thirty miles north of Covington. The Union cavalry was scattered, and some men drowned when a bridge they were crossing over Mulberry Creek collapsed. Other Union cavalrymen were drawn to the engagement and inflicted 40 casualties on the pursuing Confederates. Union casualties were not reported.

Mississippi. Confederate reconnaissance to Woodville began.

Mississippi. After his operation against Confederate Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest in July, Union Major-General Andrew Jackson Smith had been ordered to repeat the effort to achieve Forrest’s defeat. Smith left Grand Junction and headed for Oxford, intending to repair the railroad and gather supplies at Oxford, before proceeding onward to Columbus. Forrest sent Brigadier-General James Ronald Chalmers’ cavalry division to Holly Springs to delay the movement down the Mississippi Central Railroad. He believed that the Union move to Oxford was a feint and that the main advance would be further to the west, so he remained around Okolona with the rest of his command under Brigadier-General Abraham Buford.

Missouri. Skirmish near Fayette.

New Mexico Territory. Reconnaissance from Fort Sumner began towards the Sacramento Mountains against the Apache Indians and the Coyoteros. The Federal troops were aided by the Navajos, who acted as guides and scouts.

Tennessee. Pursuit from Athens ended.

Tennessee. Skirmish at Triune.

Tennessee. Union reconnaissance began from Cumberland Gap into Lee County, Virginia, and to Tazewell.

Virginia. USS Miami, Acting Lieutenant George W Graves, engaged Confederate artillery at Wilcox’s Landing on the James River which was firing on Union transports. After an hour under fire, the Confederates withdrew.

Virginia. Union reconnaissance began from Cumberland Gap into Lee County and to Tazewell, Tennessee.

West Virginia. Incidents at Westfield and Summit Point.
