1864 April 5th

April 5 1864 Tuesday

Red River Campaign
Arkansas Campaign
Forrest’s Second West Tennessee Raid

Go to April 6 1864

Arkansas. Expedition to Little River began.

Arkansas. Skirmish at Whiteley’s Mills.

Arkansas. Incidents at Stone’s Farm and Roseville.

Arkansas. Skirmish at Marks’ Mills.

Arkansas. Union Major-General Frederick Steele’s column continued to struggle across the Little Missouri River against persistent Confederate cavalry skirmishing.

Florida. Following the Union evacuation of, Florida, gunboats under Commander John W Balch continued to patrol the St John’s river. USS Ottawa, Lieutenant-Commander S Livingston Breese, remained at Picolata, and USS Pawnee, Commander John W Balch, remained at Jacksonville. USS Mahaska, Lieutenant-Commander Robert F Lewis, USS Unadilla, Lieutenant-Commander James Stillwell, and USS Norwich, Acting Master Frank B Meriam, continued to convoy troops on the river.

Kentucky. Skirmish at Quicksand Creek.

Louisiana. Skirmish at Natchitoches.

Louisiana. Smallpox had broken out in the Marine Brigade of Union Brigadier-General Alfred Washington Ellet and its 3,000 men were sent back from Natchitoches to Vicksburg to recover. Brigadier-General Thomas Kilby Smith’s division was chosen to replace it aboard the steamers. New reinforcements arrived to replace some of the losses in the form of the 1,500 black soldiers of the Corps d’Afrique.

Louisiana. Alarmed by the strength of the apparently irresistible Union advance up the Red River, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith rode from his headquarters at Shreveport to meet Lieutenant-General Richard Taylor at Mansfield.

Missouri. Expedition from New Madrid. to Little River.

Missouri. Skirmishes occurred in the swamps of Little River near Osceola and on Pemiscot Bayou. Union troops were attacked as they slept, with some men being killed and wounded on both sides.

North Carolina. A Union scouting party surprised and captured a Confederate group near Blount’s Creek.

North Carolina. In late March, Union forces at Plymouth had sunk hulks, some armed with percussion torpedoes, to obstruct the Roanoke River and provide some defence against the Confederate ironclad ram CSS Albemarle being built further up the river. Intelligence reports about the CSS Albemarle suggested that its light draft would nevertheless allow it to pass over the obstructions in the river without hindrance.

Virginia. Confederate General Robert Edward Lee alerted the Army of Northern Virginia to leave its winter quarters and to be ready for active operations in the expectation that the Union army would cross the Rapidan.
