Arkansas. Skirmish near Little Rock.

Arkansas. Union survivors of the disaster at Marks’ Mills reached Camden with news of the huge loss of men, supplies, and wagons. This loss of desperately needed supplies compelled Union Major-General Frederick Steele to give up all thought of uniting with Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks on the Red River, or even of surviving a siege at Camden. After conferring with his chief commanders (Brigadier-General John Milton Thayer, Brigadier-General Eugene Asa Carr, and Brigadier-General Frederick Sigel Salomon), he agreed that he had to save his army by flight. The shortage of provisions meant that it would not be long before his force was forced to surrender by the increasing number of Confederates gathering near Camden under the command of General Edmund Kirby Smith.
Steele evacuated Camden and commenced an overnight march, retreating northwards through Princeton in the direction of Little Rock. All remaining rations were distributed, all immovable stores were destroyed, and the remnant of the supplies was loaded into the few remaining wagons. Barely a single day’s ration was available to sustain each man for the hundred-mile trek. Every effort was made to conceal the preparations and the normal routines of camp were maintained to deceive the Confederates. By midnight, the wagons had crossed the pontoon bridge over the Ouachita and the infantry prepared to follow.

Florida. Expedition from Jacksonville to Lake Monroe began. Union Brigadier-General William Birney reported the seizure of two blockade runners, Fannie and Shell, in addition to cotton, cattle, and other supplies.

Florida. USS Ottawa, Lieutenant-Commander S Livingston Breese, and a launch from USS Pawnee under Acting Master John C Champion convoyed the transports Harriet A Weed and Mary Benton up the St John’s River. This move was ordered by Union Brigadier General William Birney after reports of Confederates operating near Fort Gates and threatening St Augustine. Several small craft were destroyed before the Union force withdrew on 28 April.

Florida. USS Union, Acting Lieutenant Edward Conroy, captured the schooner O K attempting to run the blockade between Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbour.

Cane and Red Rivers, Louisiana. The ironclad gunboat USS Eastport was destroyed after running aground repeatedly in the Red River and proving impossible to salvage. More than 3,000 pounds of powder were placed aboard, and the combustible fuse was lit personally by Lieutenant-Commander Seth Ledyard Phelps USN after the electrical detonator failed. Phelps barely survived but the explosion shattered the gunboat and created a troublesome obstruction blocking the channel.
The Union salvage fleet that had attempted to save the USS Eastport was then engaged by Confederate raiders at the confluence of the Cane and Red Rivers. Confederate Lieutenant J H Caudle and Captain Florian Cornay’s battery engaged Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter’s flotilla of USS Cricket, Acting Master Henry Gorringe, USS Fort Hindman, Acting Lieutenant John Pearce, USS Juliet, Acting Master J S Watson, and two pump boats Champion 3 and Champion 5 were also engaged as they awaited the destruction of the stranded USS Eastport. The Confederates charged USS Cricket and attempted to board the ship, but were driven back by close-range fire from the gunboats.
Later in the day, near the mouth of the Cane River at Deloach’s Bluff, Confederate artillery and riflemen struck Porter’s ships again. USS Cricket was struck thirty-two times in five minutes and lost 12 killed and 19 wounded out of its crew of 50 men. It ran aground and caught fire, but the crew got it free and it escaped downstream during the night. Pump Steamer Champion No 3 took a direct hit in her boiler and exploded. An estimated 170 out of 175 crewmen and passengers, all of the latter being runaway slaves, were scalded to death before it drifted out of control and was captured. USS Juliet’s engine was disabled by Confederate shot, but Champion No 5, although badly hit, succeeded in towing her upstream out of range. The USS Juliet lost fifteen casualties. The USS Fort Hindman evaded a serious attack by staying upstream. The ironclad USS Neosho, Acting Lieutenant Samuel Howard, attempting to assist the embattled gunboats, arrived after the ships had passed the batteries, having itself endured the heavy fire. USS Fort Hindman also covered the withdrawal of the disabled vessels, and the night was spent making urgent repairs.

Missouri. Skirmish in Wayne County.

North Carolina. The loss of Plymouth to the Confederates forced the Union forces to evacuate Washington.

Tennessee. Reconnaissance to Pulaski ended.

Virginia. Skirmish at Winchester.

Virginia. The reforms of the Union Army of the Potomac instigated by Major-General George Gordon Meade and accelerated by Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant, replenished its numbers and brought it to a high level of readiness for the impending campaign. Once the IX Corps arrived and was assimilated into his army, Grant could count on an active field force of over 122,000 infantry, cavalry, and artillerymen. A further 24,000 men were sick or otherwise unavailable for active duty. This contrasted sharply with the opposing Confederate Army of Northern Virginia which had fewer than 62,000 men available for active duty.
