Vicksburg Campaign
Jones’ and Imboden’s West Virginia Raid
First Bayou Teche Expedition
Brazil. CSS Florida, Lieutenant John Newland Maffitt, captured the ship Crown Point off the coast of Brazil. After removing stores, Maffitt burned the prize.
Alabama. USS De Soto Captain William M Walker, seized the schooner Sea Bird bound from Havana, off Pensacola Bay.
Florida. USS Huntsville, Acting Lieutenant W C Rogers, captured the schooner A J Hodge at sea off the east Florida coast.
Louisiana. Union reconnaissance from Baton Rouge ended.
Louisiana. Leaving the larger portion of his gunboat flotilla on the Red River, Union Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter returned to Grand Gulf. Union Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks advised Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut that the withdrawal of USS Hartford and other vessels downriver from above Port Hudson would reopen an avenue of supplies to Port Hudson. Farragut responded by directing Commodore James Shedden Palmer remain to remain above Port Hudson until the fall of Port Hudson.
Mississippi. Skirmish at Fourteen Mile Creek.
Mississippi. Skirmishes at Mississippi Springs, Baldwin’s Ferry, and Hall’s Ferry on the Big Black River.
Mississippi. Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston arrived at Jackson after a three-day journey from Tennessee via Atlanta, Montgomery, Mobile, and Meridian. He assumed field command of Confederate forces in Mississippi. He found a force of 6,000 men in the two brigades of Brigadier-General William Henry Talbot Walker and Brigadier-General John Gregg (who had retired from Raymond the previous day) to oppose the 25,000 Union men closing in on the state capital from the west and south. He felt that it was already too late to reinforce Lieutenant-General John Clifford Pemberton’s for his defence of Vicksburg. Johnston occupied prepared positions across the two main roads to Jackson from the west. He sent word for Pemberton to leave Vicksburg and to move towards Jackson so that their united force could defeat the invaders.
Mississippi. Resistance at Raymond had shown Union Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant that the Confederates were in strength both at Jackson and at Edward’s Station fifteen miles to the northwest. The action at Raymond had delayed the Union advance on Jackson for a day but failed to prevent other Union troops from reaching the Southern Railroad and isolating Vicksburg from reinforcement and re-supply.
News that part of Pemberton’s force had retreated to the rail centre at Jackson, where it was receiving reinforcements from across the Confederacy, led to a change in Grant’s plan to capture Vicksburg. From his headquarters at Dillon, he decided to shift his main focus from Edwards Station to Jackson, where the main Confederate force seemed to be concentrating. Originally, Union Major-General James Birdseye McPherson’s two divisions of XVII Corps were assigned to destroy Jackson, but Grant now reinforced this column for a full-scale advance on the Mississippi capital. His orders at 9.15 pm assigned new objectives for the morning. McPherson would aim for Clinton west of Jackson on the railroad, nine miles further north. Having started before dawn, McPherson reached Clinton by 10 am. McPherson began to wreck the railroad west of Clinton and was then expected to head eastwards the following day. McPherson sent reports that strong Confederate forces were advancing from Jackson towards Raymond, but Grant had already countered this by concentrating nine of his ten divisions, with 40,000 men, towards that point.
Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman’s XV Corps was ordered to turn east from Dillon through Raymond to attack Jackson from the south. By midday, Sherman was six miles beyond Raymond and about six miles from Jackson. Major-General John Alexander McClernand would leave a single division of XIII Corps to guard the crossing of the Big Black River and to Fourteen Mile Creek against the Confederates in Vicksburg and others would reinforce Sherman’s and McPherson’s Corps.
Missouri. Union reconnaissance from Newtonia to Centre Creek and French Point began.
Ohio. Union Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside held a military tribunal to try former Congressman Clement Laird Vallandigham for anti-war and pro-Confederate sentiments.
South Carolina. USS Daffodil, Acting Master E M Baldwin, seized the blockade-running British schooner Wonder off Port Royal.
South Carolina. A boat expedition from USS Kingfisher departed from St Helena Sound for Edisto where previous reconnaissance missions had revealed a large quantity of corn. The expedition returned five days later with 800 bushels to prevent its falling into Confederate hands, and to supply the refugees around the Union camps.
Tennessee. Skirmishes near Woodburn and South Union, with an unsuccessful Confederate attack on a railroad train near South Union.
