Louisiana. Lacking sufficient river transportation, Union Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks sent his three divisions from Alexandria to march overland along the Red River to attack Port Hudson. They were assigned a route through Simsport, where they would cross Bayou Sara about twelve miles above Port Hudson. Union Brigadier-General William Hemsley Emory gave up command of one of Banks’ three divisions because of ill health and it passed to Brigadier-General Halbert Eleazer Paine. Meanwhile, Banks departed by steamer and then train from Brashear City for his headquarters at New Orleans.

Jackson, Mississippi. In Jackson, Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston learned that two army corps from the Union Army of the Tennessee (XV Corps under Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman and XVII Corps under Major-General James Birdseye McPherson) were advancing to cut the railroad between Jackson and Vicksburg. Confederate Lieutenant-General John Clifford Pemberton had left Vicksburg with the bulk of his force and was reported to have reached the Big Black River, well on the way toward joining Johnston’s force at Jackson. Johnston consulted with the local commander, Brigadier-General John Gregg, and learned that only about 6,000 troops were currently available to defend Jackson, comprising Gregg’s own and Brigadier-General William Henry Talbot Walker’s brigades. Johnston was forced to order the evacuation of Jackson but Gregg was required to act as a rearguard until the evacuation was complete.
While Johnston waited at Jackson for Pemberton’s break-out from Vicksburg so that he could unite the two forces and launch a converging counterattack. Pemberton was now at Edward’s Station west of Jackson when he received orders to attack the four Union divisions reported to be at Clinton. Pemberton took with him 17,500 men in the three divisions of Major-General John Stevens Bowen, Major-General William Wing Loring, and Major-General Carter Littlepage Stevenson. Two divisions were left behind under Major-General Martin Luther Smith and Major-General John Horace Forney to hold Vicksburg, Haines’ Bluff, Warrenton, and the Big Black River crossings.
Pemberton held a council of war with Bowen, Loring, and Stevenson at noon, presenting the options of an eastward advance to Clinton, an advance southwards, or a continued defence of the Big Black River. These options were in contravention of direct orders from Richmond and from Johnston. The council agreed that combining the army with Johnston’s was essential but they did not believe it could be accomplished by attacking the strong enemy forces at Clinton. Loring proposed an alternative approach. The force could cut the Union supply lines by marching to Dillon about nine miles to the southeast. This would bring Pemberton’s army nearer to Jackson and would also force the Union army to turn and fight to defend its communications on the ground of Pemberton’s choosing. This compromise seemed the best available option and the army was ordered to march at dawn. Pemberton sent a despatch to Johnston advising that he proposed to attempt a concentration at Dillon rather than making a direct advance to Clinton. This decision lengthened and diverted Pemberton’s march and in the interim, the Union army closed in on Johnston’s small force at Jackson.
Now that since the entire Union army had cut itself free of its base and was living off the land, Union Major-General John Alexander McClernand’s XIII Corps was no longer required to guard the supply lines back to Grand Gulf. McClernand was no longer needed for the advance on Jackson either, so he was ordered to go north from Raymond to Bolton Depot, eight miles east of Clinton, to guard against any eastward movement from Vicksburg. McClernand could be reinforced easily by Major-General Francis Preston Blair’s division, which was guarding the supply trains.
Sherman was regulating his approach to Jackson from the south to coincide with McPherson who was coming eastwards along the railroad from Clinton. By mid-morning, Sherman was within three miles of Jackson but was hampered by torrential rains and muddy roads. He looked for a way around the right flank towards Pearl River. McPherson was also in place further north by 10 am and preparing to make a frontal attack along the railroad. Once the rain began to subside at about 11 am, McPherson moved his leading division forward. The Union attacks were stopped when they reached the Confederate entrenchments at about noon and were repelled with 300 casualties. McPherson rallied the troops and then sent them forward again. They found the Confederate infantry gone and quickly overran the seven guns left behind as a decoy. McPherson pushed on against Confederate Brigadier-General William Henry Talbot Walker’s determined brigade and finally broke it, although Confederate artillery slowed the pursuit.
In mid-afternoon, Johnston informed Gregg that the evacuation was complete and that he should disengage and follow the withdrawal. When Sherman attacked from the southwest, he discovered Gregg’s brigade was already in retreat. He overran ten emplaced guns in the Confederate defences for the loss of just 32 men. The Confederates escaped with about 200 casualties.
Union forces occupied the state capital, the third Confederate state capital taken thus far, and the senior officers enjoyed a celebration in the Bowman House, hosted by Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant who had been travelling with Sherman’s XV Corps. Meanwhile, the troops pillaged, looted, and burned part of the town before wrecking all the railroad installations, foundries, warehouses, arsenals, machine shops, and other industrial facilities. The city was deprived of all means of waging war in the future.
Grant received a confirmatory despatch from Secretary of War, Edwin McMasters Stanton, authorising belatedly his rash campaign and confirming his complete authority and his discretion to pass judgment on any who failed to support his progress.
Casualties at Jackson were estimated at 48 killed, 273 wounded and 11 missing for the Union. After stragglers were rounded up total casualties were assessed as 850 for the Confederates. (CWSAC Major Battle Union Victory)
