Vicksburg Campaign – Siege of Vicksburg
Gettysburg Campaign
Siege of Port Hudson

Go to June 6 1863

Atlantic Ocean. CSS Alabama, Captain Raphael Semmes, captured the ship Talisman in the mid-Atlantic en route to Shanghai. The crew brought on board two brass 12-pounder guns mounted on ship carriages. Four of these pieces were found to have ammunition. They also acquired two steam boilers suitable for fitting out a steam gunboat. The prize was then burned.

Kentucky. After being ordered to transfer most of his IX Corps to support operations at Vicksburg, Union Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside attempted to replenish his numbers for an advance into eastern Tennessee. He brought together recruits and inexperienced garrison troops from the surrounding areas and began to form a replacement mobile force to become the proposed new XXIII Corps.

ORDER OF BATTLE: UNION IX CORPS

Union Department of the Tennessee: Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant
Army of the Tennessee: Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant
IX Corps (Tennessee): Major-General John Grubb Parke
1st Division, IX Corps (Tennessee): Brigadier-General Thomas Welsh
1st Brigade, 1st Division, IX Corps (Tennessee): Colonel H Bowman
3rd Brigade, 1st Division, IX Corps (Tennessee): Colonel D Leasure
2nd Division, IX Corps (Tennessee): Brigadier-General Robert Brown Potter
1st Brigade, 2nd Division, IX Corps (Tennessee): Colonel S G Griffin
2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, IX Corps (Tennessee): Brigadier-General Edward Ferrero
3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, IX Corps (Tennessee): Colonel B C Christ

Louisiana, Confederate Major-General Richard Taylor, recently reinforced by Major-General John George Walker’s division from Texas, disembarked on the eastern bank of the Tensas River about twenty-five miles west of Young’s Point on the Mississippi. This was a key point on the Union supply lines running along the west bank of the Mississippi. Taylor dismissed his unarmed men to return back towards Alexandria while he prepared to raid the Union communications with his most effective forces.

Mississippi. The Union IX Corps was transferred from the Army of the Ohio in Kentucky to the Army of the Tennessee in Mississippi, in order to strengthen the besieging army at Vicksburg. Major-General John Grubb Parke was assigned to command IX Corps for its operations in Mississippi.

Missouri. The Army of the Frontier began to be disbanded as the remnants of its two divisions were formed into “Herron’s Division” to be sent under Major-General Francis Jay Herron as reinforcements for the siege of Vicksburg.

North Carolina. Expedition to Chowan River and Gates County began. A Union force passed through Gates County, down the Chowan River, into Gatesville, and then towards Mintonsville and Sandy Cross began. The force captured prisoners along the way.

South Carolina. USS Wissahickon, Lieutenant-Commander John Lee Davis, attacked and sank an unnamed steamer attempting to run the blockade out of Charleston.

Tennessee. Reconnaissance to Smithville ended.

Virginia. Expedition from Yorktown to Aylett’s and Walkerton ended.

Virginia. Incident at Deep Run.

Virginia. While the majority of his cavalry division was concentrated near Brandy Station, Confederate Major-General James Ewell Brown Stuart requested permission from General Robert Edward Lee to hold a grand field review of five of his brigades. This grand review involved nearly 9,000 mounted troopers and four batteries of horse artillery, charging in a simulated battle at Inlet Station, about two miles southwest of Brandy Station.

Virginia. The Confederate divisions of Major-General Edward Johnson and Major-General Jubal Anderson Early left Fredericksburg, following Major-General Robert Emmett Rodes’ Division as II Corps (Northern Virginia) was relocated from Fredericksburg to Culpeper. This left only the three divisions of III Corps facing the Union forces across the Rappahannock River.

Franklin’s Crossing, Virginia, also known as Deep Run. Union Major-General Joseph Hooker ordered a reconnaissance in force by Major-General John Sedgwick’s VI Corps to check reports that the Confederates were withdrawing from Fredericksburg. Sedgwick sent the 26th New Jersey Infantry and 5th Vermont Infantry from 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, VI Corps, with support from the 15th New York Engineers and 50th New York Engineers, plus other detachments, to cross the Rappahannock River at Franklin’s Crossing. Artillery and rifle fire could not dislodge the Confederates from their rifle pits on the southern bank, so Union infantrymen boarded pontoons and pushed the Confederates out, taking 35 prisoners for the loss of 6 men killed and 35 wounded. Sedgwick reported that he believed the Confederate army to still be in position. Hooker was unconvinced and sought, but was denied, permission by President Abraham Lincoln to cross the river in greater force in order to attack the Confederate army. Lincoln insisted that, if the Confederates were moving away from Fredericksburg, Hooker should remain north of the Rappahannock and not be drawn further away from the capital. Hooker decided instead to launch an extensive cavalry reconnaissance towards the Rapidan River to investigate the Confederates’ movements. He kept his bridgehead in place at Fredericksburg but alerted the rest of the army to prepare to march at short notice.
