Vicksburg Campaign – Siege of Vicksburg
Gettysburg Campaign
Siege of Port Hudson

Go to June 7 1863

Atlantic Ocean. CSS Florida, Lieutenant John Newland Maffitt, captured and burned the ship Southern Cross, bound from Mexico to New York with a cargo of wood.

Arkansas. The Confederate steamer Lady Walton surrendered to USS Tyler, Lieutenant-Commander James M Pritchett, at the mouth of the White River.

California. Skirmish at Oak Camp, fifteen miles from Fort Gaston, as Indians ambushed a pack train. The Union survivors fled to Fawn Prairie.

Florida. USS Tahoma, Lieutenant-Commander Alexander Alderman Semmes, seized the schooner Statesman, which had run aground at Gadsen’s Point with a cargo of cotton.

Indian Territory. Operations around Fort Gibson began.

Indian Territory. Skirmish at Spring Creek.

Kansas. Skirmish at Shawneetown.

Kentucky. Skirmish at Waitsboro.

Richmond, Louisiana, also known as Milliken’s Bend. Confederate Major-General Richard Taylor advanced from the Tensas River to attack the Union supply depot at Young’s Point on the Mississippi. The Milliken’s Bend area, fifteen miles to the northwest of Vicksburg, had until recently served as a staging area for the Union forces converging on Vicksburg. It was a site of supply depots and hospitals, many of which were manned and guarded by black soldiers of whom some were recently recruited freed slaves. Hearing rumours of the Confederate approach, Union Colonel Hermann Lieb made a reconnaissance with the Corps d’Afrique and two companies of the 10th Illinois Cavalry toward Richmond. About three miles from Richmond, Lieb encountered Confederate troops under Brigadier-General Henry Eustace McCullough at the Tallulah railroad depot and drove them back. He retired, fearing that more Confederate troops might be in the vicinity. While retiring, a squad of Union cavalry came into sight, fleeing from a force of Confederates. Lieb got his men into a battle line and helped to disperse the pursuing enemy. He then retired to the post at Milliken’s Bend and reported the Confederate approach. The 23rd Iowa Infantry and two gunboats came to his assistance.
Taylor continued to Richmond and captured a small garrison. He discovered that the Union supply lines from Milliken’s Bend along the west bank of the Mississippi had now lost their importance since the Union army at Vicksburg was now being supplied along a shorter and more secure route up the Yazoo River.

Mississippi. Incident at Edwards Station.

Mississippi. Union Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant left the army at to make a tour of inspection up the Yazoo River to Satartia. The two-day journey was later exaggerated by critics who wished to undermine his reputation as an “alcoholic bender”. The truth of Grant’s difficulties with alcohol is more difficult to establish.

South Carolina. CSS Clarence (formerly a captured prize of CSS Florida) under Lieutenant Charles Read CSN began a brief but highly successful cruise against Union commerce by capturing and burning the bark Whistling Wind with a cargo of coal east of Cape Romain.

Tennessee. Skirmish near Murfreesboro on the Shelbyville Pike.

Virginia. Skirmish at Berryville

Virginia. Incidents at Deep Run and Franklin’s Crossing near Fredericksburg.

Virginia. As Confederate General Robert Edward Lee was not able to attend the grand cavalry review on the previous day, it was repeated with a simple parade and without a battle simulation. Some cavalrymen and newspaper reporters complained that Major-General James Ewell Brown Stuart was being driven by his vanity to make an unnecessary display that exhausted the horses.
