Taylor’s Expedition to the Mississippi

Arkansas. Confederate Lieutenant-General Theophilus Hunter Holmes met Major-General Sterling Price and Brigadier-General John Sappington Marmaduke in Jacksonport to plan an attack on the major Union depot at Helena. Holmes issued an order to take the town and to threaten Union communications on the Mississippi. Holmes ordered a concentration of forces at Little Rock for Price to lead against Helena. He collected the two infantry brigades already there under Price, another brigade under Brigadier-General James Fleming Fagan, and added 2,500 cavalrymen in two of the four brigades of Brigadier-General John Sappington Marmaduke. Marmaduke had previously detached his two other brigades after the engagement at Cape Girardeau in April. Another cavalry brigade arrived under Brigadier-General Lucius March Walker. Holmes asked for a protective cavalry screen to be spread around Helena, concealing the infantry as it crossed the St Francis River at Cotton Plant and Clarendon, fifty miles from Helena.

Florida. USS Tahoma, Lieutenant-Commander Alexander Alderman Semmes, captured the British blockade runner Harriet near Anclote Keys. USS Tahoma then chased the British blockade runner Mary Jane ashore and destroyed her at Clearwater.

Florida. USS James S Chambers, Acting Master L Nickerson, captured the schooner Rebekah off Tampa Bay.

Hines’ Raid, Indiana. Confederate Captain Thomas Hines’ raiders (disguised as Union soldiers) crossed the Ohio River between Alton and Tobinsport near Derby. Once across the Ohio River, Hines’ men rode to Paoli, successfully posing as Union soldiers. While in Paoli a party of Indiana Home Guards entered the town and informed the mayor of the deception. The Confederates escaped by convincing a separate band of Home Guards that they were surrounded, taking their best horses, and paroling the captured Union band. They headed to Corydon, where Hines met the local Copperhead leader Doctor William A Bowles, whose home was a gathering place for disgruntled members of the Democratic Party. Bowles told Hines he could raise a force of 10,000 men, but before the plan was confirmed, Hines was forced to flee. Hines’ men travelled from French Lick to Valeene. At Valeene, still posing as Union troops, they set a house on fire, but this confirmed that Hines’ men were actually Confederate marauders and resistance began to form at Paoli. Hines had hired a local man, Bryant Breeden, to guide his party to safety, but Breeden was strongly pro-Union, and he guided the Confederates onto Little Blue Island, a small island in the middle of the Ohio River near Leavenworth. A skirmish began on the island and three Confederate soldiers were killed. Hines escaped across the Ohio River with a few of his men, while the rest of the Confederate force surrendered.

Hines travelled back through Kentucky by railroad until he could rejoin Brigadier-General John Hunt Morgan at Brandenburg, Kentucky. He was put in command of Morgan’s artillery. Unconvinced by Bowles’ ambitious assurances of a popular uprising, Hines informed Morgan that no help could be expected from Confederate sympathisers in Indiana. Hines’ advice led Morgan to seize the riverboats Alice Dean and the John T McCombs subsequently for the purpose of transporting Morgan’s men across the Ohio River. Hines stayed with Morgan until the end of the Ohio Raid and during their imprisonment, first at Johnson’s Island, and later at the Ohio Penitentiary.

Louisiana. Skirmish at Plaquemine.

Louisiana. Confederate Major-General Richard Taylor sent Colonel James P Major’s cavalry brigade on a hundred-miles march through enemy-occupied territory from opposite Port Hudson southwards to Brashear City. Major was to form part of a converging attack planned for June 23rd 1863. Major’s cavalry set off south and east from Washington along Bayou Teche. During the afternoon they skirmished with a Union garrison at Plaquemine on the western bank below Baton Rouge. A raid by a company of Confederate cavalry burned two Army transport ships.

In response to the destruction of the transports, Union Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut steamed downriver from Port Hudson to Plaquemine aboard the USS Monongahela. USS Winona, Lieutenant-Commander Aaron Weaver, shelled the Confederate cavalrymen from the town. Farragut concentrated three or four gunboats at Donaldsonville to put an end to the threat to the Union supply lines to Port Hudson. Major continued to ride overnight past the fortified Union camp at Donaldsonville.

Maryland. Confederate Lieutenant-General Richard Stoddert Ewell spearheaded the advance up the Cumberland Valley while Union Major-General Darius Nash Couch, commanding the Department of the Susquehanna, struggled to bring militia and provisional forces into the field to oppose his march.

Further west, Brigadier-General William Thomas Harbaugh Brooks, commanding the District of the Monongahela, made similar efforts to rally local troops to oppose the invasion. Major-General Robert Cumming Schenck’s Middle Department and VIII Corps contended with Confederate cavalry raiders after Milroy’s retreat.

Mississippi. Skirmish at Birdsong Ferry on the Big Black River.

Mississippi. Incidents at Brownsville and Coldwater Bridge.

Mississippi. Skirmish at Belmont.

Mississippi. USS Benton, Lieutenant-Commander James A Greer, supplied Union Major-General Francis Jay Herron with two 32-pounder guns, complete with ammunition, equipment, and a naval crew to man them. ‘The battery, under the command of Acting Master J Frank Reed, contributed to the siege operations at Vicksburg.

Mississippi. Confederate operations on the Mississippi River near Memphis resulted in an attack on transports with damage to the steamers Golden Era and Platte Valley.

Mississippi. USS General Sterling Price, Commander Woodworth, and USS Mound City, Lieutenant Byron Wilson, returned to Vicksburg after a three-day reconnaissance down the Mississippi River as far as Cole’s Creek. The expedition destroyed all boats that could be used to transport Confederate troops or supplies.

Missouri. Skirmish at Rocheport on the Blue River.

North Carolina. Reconnaissance to Dover, Rocky Run, and Core Creek ended.

Ohio. Incident in Holmes County.

South Carolina. Skirmish at Edisto Island with Union pickets.

Virginia. Expedition to Blackwater River ended.

Virginia. Incident at Winchester

Virginia. Skirmish at Aldie.

Virginia. Union reconnaissance on the Peninsula from the York River towards Barhamsville above Williamsburg, to locate Confederate positions.

Middleburg, Virginia. Confederate Major-General James Ewell Brown Stuart remained on the defensive, waiting to prevent any Union attempts to force the passes in the Blue Ridge Mountains into the Shenandoah Valley. Union Major-General Alfred Pleasonton sent tentative probes towards Ashby’s Gap and Snicker’s Gap. Union Brigadier-General David McMurtrie Gregg ran into Confederate pickets around Middleburg, and Stuart quickly fell back to a commanding ridge west of town. Fearing a trap, Pleasonton ordered Gregg to withdraw to Aldie. Colonel John Irvin Gregg’s cavalry brigade was sent belatedly to support Colonel Alfred Napoleon Alexander Duffié at Middleburg, but he was too late to save the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry. He took the town and held it for three hours before being ordered back to Aldie at 6pm. He encamped halfway between the two towns and returned to attack Middleburg again the following day.

Virginia. Union reconnaissance from Camp Piatt to the Big Coal River and Little Coal River, with an unopposed ten mile detour up the Pond River, began.
