Battle of Middleburg, VA (CWSAC Formative Battle – Inconclusive)

Vicksburg Campaign – Siege of Vicksburg

Gettysburg Campaign

Siege of Port Hudson

Sanders’ East Tennessee Raid

Taylor’s Expedition to the Mississippi

Great Britain. Instructions reached Commander James Dunwoody Bulloch CSN in Liverpool to purchase a very fast steamer suitable for blockade running between Nassau, Bermuda, Charleston, and Wilmington.

Florida. The Union mortar schooner USS Para, Acting Master Edward G Furber, captured the blockade-running schooner Emma off Mosquito Inlet.

Indian Territory. Incident at Fort Gibson.

Indiana. Incident at Blue Island.

Louisiana. Confederate raid on Bayou Goula.

Louisiana. Confederate Colonel James Patrick Major’s cavalry brigade bypassed Donaldsonville and headed down Bayou La Fourche, which entered the Mississippi above the town.

Mississippi. Skirmish on the Coldwater River at Hernando

Mississippi. Incident at New Albany.

Mississippi. Skirmish near Panola.

Mississippi. Construction of a Union battery began at De Soto Point, with a 10-pounder Parrott rifle mounted in an armoured casemate built from railroad iron. It began a bombardment of Vicksburg from the western shore of the Mississippi. A second rifled gun was added on 25 June and their harassing fire continued until the end of the siege.

Mississippi. Union Colonel James Harrison Wilson, the topographical engineer on the staff of Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant, delivered an order at 2 am to Major-General John Alexander McClernand. McClernand had shown uneven performance in command but had caused most trouble by his political machinations and conspiratorial comments and criticisms expressed through the Press. The order relieved McClernand of the command of XIII Corps. McClernand’s protests on his removal fell on deaf ears in the War Department and with the President. He was succeeded by Major-General Edward Otho Cresap Ord, who had originally arrived to take over command of the independent divisions of Major-General Francis Jay Herron and Brigadier-General Jacob Gartner Lauman. Ord was now assigned to replace McClernand instead.

Ohio. Incident in Holmes County.

Tennessee. Skirmishes at Knoxville and and Lenoir Station (Hines’ Raid).

Tennessee. Skirmish at Triune.

Tennessee. A Union battery mounted to fire across the river at Cerro Gordo and manned by naval gun crews from USS Robb, Acting Ensign Hanford, was attacked unsuccessfully by Confederate troops.

Virginia. Confederate General Robert Edward Lee established his headquarters at Berryville.

Middleburg, Virginia. Union Brigadier-General David McMurtrie Gregg’s cavalry division moved against Middleburg again, sending the brigade of Colonel John Irvin Gregg towards the Confederate defenders while Brigadier-General John Buford’s division swung north towards Pot House (New Lisbon). After his flanking march, Buford eventually occupied the ground around Pot House, pushing back two regiments of Confederate Brigadier-General William Edmondson Jones’ brigade in a brief skirmish.

After a hard fight to clear the reinforced pickets from Middleburg, Colonel J I Gregg was so impressed by the Confederate position on the high ground beyond the town that he asked for support before attacking. Kilpatrick sent two regiments to help extend the Union line, and Gregg slowly advanced. The weather was extremely hot all afternoon, sapping men and horses of energy. A series of Union charges finally forced the Confederate horse artillery to withdraw, and the cavalry followed soon afterwards. Several Confederate counterattacks failed to regain control of the ridge.

Late in the day, Buford sent the Reserve Cavalry Brigade back from Pot House, and the 2nd US Cavalry and 6th US Cavalry seized a hotly contested hill south of the tiny village of Millville as darkness fell. Confederate Major-General James Ewell brown Stuart was forced to abandon his positions around Middleburg, falling back along the turnpike to occupy stone walls beyond a ravine along a stream known as Kirk’s Branch. Union Major-General Alfred Pleasonton followed up his successes cautiously and ordered his men to rest and set pickets.

Union losses were reported as 16 killed, 46 wounded, and 37 missing. The Confederates lost about 40 men, including Stuart’s Prussian chief of staff and Major Heros von Borcke, who was badly wounded. (CWSAC Formative Battle – Inconclusive)

Virginia. Reconnaissance to Big Coal River and Little Coal River ended.
