Wassaw Sound, Georgia, also known as Warsaw Sound. The Confederate ironclad ram CSS Atlanta, with two wooden steamers (CSS Isondiga and CSS Resolute) in company under Commander William Augustus Webb CSN, engaged the Union USS Weebawken, Captain John Rodgers, and USS Nahant, Commander John Downes, in Wassaw Sound. A percussion torpedo was fitted to the ram’s bow to attack the Union ironclads, but it was also armed with two 6-inch rifles and two 7-inch rifles.
CSS Atlanta moved off before daylight and grounded coming into the channel. It was extricated but failed to obey the helm and ran aground again. USS Weehawken opened fire and hit the Confederate ram five times before USS Nahant moved in to attack. After two hours, two Confederate gun crews were out of action and CSS Atlanta was helpless and hard aground. CSS Atlanta was compelled to surrender and the crew of 21 officers, 96 sailors, and 28 marines was captured. The two Confederate wooden escorts returned upriver without engaging. Rodgers reported that CSS Atlanta carried two 6-inch and two 7-inch rifles. The 6-inch guns fired in broadside, but the 7-inch guns worked on a pivot either as broadside or bow and stern guns.

Indiana. Incident at Orleans.

Kentucky. Confederate Captain Thomas Hines had travelled with a picked band of men, known as the Indiana Grays, through Brownsville and Elizabethtown. At Brownsville, they stole sets of Union uniforms and at Elizabethtown they robbed a train, providing Hines’ force with Union currency. When they reached the Ohio River, Hines’ then informed his men that they would pose as the Union troops of Brigadier-General Jeremiah Tilford Boyle equipped with fake orders to pursue deserters. They crossed the Ohio River at Rome before moving to Paoli and then returning.

Maryland. Skirmish at Catoctin Creek and Point of Rocks as the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia crossed the Potomac River into Maryland.

Mississippi. Confederate operations began towards Union river transport at Memphis.

Mississippi. Incident at Holly Springs.

Mississippi: Confederate Brigadier-General Isham Warren Garrott was shot and killed in the trenches at Vicksburg by a Union sharpshooter.

Mississippi. Union Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant was sent a copy of a Memphis newspaper in which Major-General John Alexander McClernand had published an unofficial and bombastic order to the men of his own Corps congratulating their exceptional performance in the Vicksburg campaign and implying the failures of others. Grant immediately sent a copy of the offending clipping to McClernand and provoked a correspondence that would result eventually in McClernand’s removal from command of XIII Corps.

Aldie, Virginia. Union Brigadier-General Alfred Pleasonton decided to push a way through Major-General James Ewell Brown Stuart’s cavalry screen east of the Shenandoah Valley. To accomplish his goal, he ordered Brigadier-General David McMurtrie Gregg’s division to move westward from Manassas Junction down the Little River Turnpike to Aldie. The Little River Turnpike intersected both the Ashby’s Gap Turnpike and Snicker’s Gap Turnpike near Aldie. The two roads led through the Blue Ridge Mountain into the Valley.
Early the same morning, Confederate Colonel Thomas Taylor Munford led the 2^nd Virginia Cavalry and 3^rd Virginia Cavalry from Brigadier-General Fitzhugh Lee’s Cavalry brigade eastward across the Loudoun Valley from Upperville through Middleburg to Aldie on a reconnaissance and foraging mission towards the Bull Run Mountains. He established a line of pickets in Aldie to watch for enemy activity and withdrew his two regiments northwest of town on the Snicker’s Gap Turnpike to camp on the farm of Franklin Carter.
At about 4 pm, Gregg’s advance column under Brigadier-General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (2^nd New York Cavalry, 4^th New York Cavalry, 6^th Ohio Cavalry, and 1^st Massachusetts Cavalry) arrived in Aldie. Just west of the village the 1^st Massachusetts Cavalry encountered Munford’s pickets and drove them back. Around the same time, the rest of Munford’s brigade (the 1^st Virginia Cavalry, 4^th Virginia Cavalry, and 5^th Virginia Cavalry, under the command of Colonel Williams Carter Wickham) arrived at Dover Mills, a small hamlet on the Little River west of Aldie. Wickham ordered Colonel Thomas Lafayette Rosser to take the 5^th Virginia Cavalry to locate a campsite closer to Aldie. As they moved east they ran into the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry whom they easily drove back through Aldie to the main Union body.
After positioning his sharpshooters (50 men of Company I under Captain Reuben F Boston) east of the William Adam farmhouse, Rosser deployed along a ridge that covered the two roads leading out of Aldie and awaited the arrival of the Union troopers, as well as Munford and Wickham. As Rosser withdrew westwards, the 1^st Massachusetts Cavalry, with aid from the 4^th New York Cavalry, charged against what they believed to be a retreating enemy. Rosser’s line held, and he mounted a counter-charge in concert with a sharp volley from the sharpshooters he had placed on his left. Rosser easily drove the Union back, securing his hold on the Ashby’s Gap Turnpike.
Kilpatrick then turned his attention towards the Snicker’s Gap Turnpike. An artillery duel began, and more cavalry arrived on both sides. A furious fight erupted, which at first went in favour of the Confederates as Union charges were stopped and then forced back by sharpshooters entrenched along a stone wall. The 1^st Massachusetts Cavalry was trapped in a blind curve on the Snicker’s Gap Turnpike and was severely reduced, losing 198 of its 294 men in the eight companies that were engaged.
The tide turned as Union reinforcements charged into the fray in the fading light and the 6^th Ohio Cavalry overran Boston’s detachment on the Ashby’s Gap Turnpike, capturing or killing most of his men. The fighting died down around 8 pm as Munford withdrew his command west towards Middleburg. Munford’s withdrawal coincided with an order from Stuart to retire as more Union cavalry had been sighted at Middleburg.
Aldie was the first in a series of small battles along the Ashby’s Gap Turnpike in which Stuart’s forces successfully delayed Pleasonton’s thrust across the Loudoun Valley, thereby depriving The Union commander an opportunity to locate the main Confederate army.
Union casualties were 305 dead and wounded, with the Confederates losing between 100 and 119 men. (CWSAC Formative Battle – Inconclusive)

Middleburg, Virginia. Confederate Major-General James Ewell Brown Stuart established his headquarters at Middleburg and scattered his brigades throughout the Loudoun Valley to watch for enemy activity. Early in the morning, Union Colonel Alfred Napoleon Alexander Duffié led 275 to 280 men of the 1^st Rhode Island Cavalry westward from the Army of the Potomac’s camp near Centreville. Major-General Alfred Pleasonton had ordered him to camp at Middleburg that evening and then to proceed the next day toward Noland’s Ferry, extending his march to the west as far as Snickersville. At the same time, Brigadier-General David McMurtrie Gregg’s cavalry division moved to Aldie (see above).
Duffié crossed the Bull Run Mountains at Thoroughfare Gap at 9.30 am, easily pushing aside pickets from Confederate Colonel John Randolph Chambliss’ brigade. The Confederate commanders could not believe that a small Union regiment would dare to travel so deep into enemy territory without support, so Chambliss did not attack, fearing that the column was the advance element of a much larger enemy force. Duffié continued on his isolated march, turning to the north by 11 am and heading for Middleburg as ordered. Arriving at about 4 pm, Duffié drove in the few Confederate pickets deployed there and disrupted Stuart’s evening of socialising with local ladies. Stuart and his staff quickly retreated to Rector’s Crossroads, the location of his closest brigade.
Confederate Colonel Thomas Taylor Munford entered the action after his withdrawal from the battle at Aldie. Stuart ordered Brigadier-General Beverly Holcombe Robertson to move his cavalry brigade immediately to Middleburg to crush the Union cavalry. Duffié barricaded the streets of Middleburg, dismounting half of his regiment behind stone walls, and then sent for help from Brigadier-General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick’s brigade which was still near Aldie. At 7 pm, Stuart’s attack routed the outnumbered Rhode Islanders. Many of Duffié’s men were captured that evening or the next morning as Chambliss had cut off their escape route. Duffié finally returned to Centreville having fought his way out with only 4 officers and 27 men still present under his command. He reported 268 casualties, including many men missing. About 100 men later rejoined the remnants of the regiment after evading capture.
