Second Corinth Campaign
Kentucky. Union expedition from Columbus to Covington, Durhamville, and Fort Randolph (Tennessee) began.

Kentucky. Confederate General Braxton Bragg handed over temporary command of the Army of Tennessee to Major-General Leonidas Polk at Bardstown. Bragg departed to confer with Major-General Edmund Kirby Smith in Lexington. Bragg aimed to announce a Confederate provisional government to be led by the provisional Lieutenant-Governor, Richard Hawes, who was travelling from Chattanooga to Frankfort. A new supply depot was set up at Harrodsburg for the Confederate army, to hold the supplies being gathered and foraged in the region.
Kentucky. Union Major-General Don Carlos Buell completed the concentration of the Army of the Ohio at Louisville. The District of Western Virginia was established and subordinated to Buell’s Department of the Ohio to facilitate coordinated operations against Confederate threats and incursions in western Virginia and along the Ohio River. The new district comprised western Virginia and the counties in Ohio adjacent to Virginia. The experienced engineer officer Brigadier-General Quincy Adams Gillmore arrived from the Department of the South to assume command of the District of Western Virginia.
Mississippi. Skirmishes at Coldwater and Friar’s Point.
Mississippi. The forces of the Confederate District of Southern Mississippi and East Louisiana under Major-General Earl Van Dorn were joined by Major-General Sterling Price’s Army of the West at Ripley. The combined force intended to launch an offensive campaign against Corinth. Van Dorn actually had only one division under Major-General Mansfield Lovell, drawn from the former District of Mississippi. Price had two divisions under Brigadier-General Dabney Herndon Maury and Brigadier-General Louis Hébert. The combined army numbered about 22,000 men and was officially renamed as the Army of West Tennessee on 16 October 1862, when Van Dorn was confirmed in supreme command. Price retained command of his former Army of the West element, which was re-designated as a corps of the Army of West Tennessee, but it was still usually referred to as the Army of the West. The cavalry was led by Brigadier-General William Hicks Jackson. Van Dorn and Price cooperated poorly and discipline was weak. During the afternoon, Lovell’s division began the campaign with a diversionary march northwards in the direction of Bolivar.
