USA. US Secretary of War Edwin McMasters Stanton suspended the formal prisoner exchange of officers, following disputes about the status of black troops and other matters. The Confederate authorities refused to exchange black prisoners of war on the same basis as white troops and insisted that they should be treated not as soldiers in uniform but as fugitive slaves to be returned to servitude.

Arkansas. Skirmish at Dripping (or Digging) Springs.

Van Buren, Arkansas. Union cavalry from Major-General James Gilpatrick Blunt’s Army of the Frontier made a forced march across the Arkansas River to attack the Confederate base at Van Buren. They destroyed three steamboats (Notre, Key West, and Rose Douglass), while the Confederates burned the steamers Eva and Arkansas to prevent capture. Considerable quantities of supplies gathered painstakingly over many months by Confederate Major-General Thomas Carmichael Hindman were also destroyed. This raid made it impossible for Hindman’s forces to remain in the area and he made another dispirited retreat with his survivors of the defeat at Prairie Grove, losing more and more deserters on the way. With fewer than 4,000 of his original 11,500 recruits still under arms, Hindman’s plans to send his troops to Little Rock were ruined. As a result, plans to transport them from Little Rock to reinforce Vicksburg also had to be abandoned.

Kentucky. Skirmish at Muldraugh’s Hill after Confederate Brigadier-General John Hunt Morgan blew up a bridge near the birthplace of US President Abraham Lincoln, near Fort Knox.

Louisiana. Incident at Baton Rouge.

Louisiana. Confederate Major-General Franklin Gardner arrived at Port Hudson on 27 December 1862. After taking command, he reorganised the defences at Port Hudson, concentrating the fields of fire of the heavy guns more effectively and setting up more earthworks using packed earth and sod rather than traditional gabions or sandbags. Lacking an adequate engineering staff, he promoted Private Henry Glinder, a former member of the Coast Survey, to 1^st Lieutenant of Engineers as his main assistant. He increased the efficiency of supply and storage and built protected roads within the defences to speed the movement of troops.

Mississippi. Confederate Major-General Earl Van Dorn’s raiders returned in mid-afternoon to Grenada after their successful raid through Tennessee and northern Mississippi and their destruction of the Union supply depot at Holly Springs.

Mississippi. The Defences of Vicksburg was organised with the brigades of Brigadier-General Seth Maxwell Barton, Brigadier-General John Crawford Vaughn, Brigadier-General John Gregg, Brigadier-General Edward Dorr Tracy, and Brigadier-General Stephen Dill Lee’s provisional Division (comprising provisional brigades under Colonel William T Withers and Brigadier-General Francis Asbury Shoup but currently under Colonel Allen Thomas. Major-General Martin Luther Smith was assigned to command this force as the primary defence of the fortress.

Chickasaw Bluffs, Mississippi, also known as Chickasaw Bayou or Walnut Hills. Several futile attempts were made by Union Major-General William Tecumseh’s Sherman’s expedition to get around the defences at Walnut Hills, which were defended by troops from Major-General Martin Luther Smith’s Defences of Vicksburg. The Union troops struggled to find their way in the almost trackless swamps and bayous, even constructing a bridge over the wrong bayou when attempting to build a route from Johnson’s Plantation to the centre of their front line. Eventually, objectives were identified and assigned to the various divisions.
Sherman intended that all of his four divisions should make an attack on the part of the Chickasaw Bluffs known as Walnut Hills, although the two main efforts were to be made half a mile apart by Brigadier-General George Washington Morgan’s division. The Union advance pushed in the Confederate pickets successfully but was held back at Fishing Lake and along Chickasaw Bayou by Confederate fire from the bluffs. Reconnaissance identified two crossing points at shallow areas over sandbars but they were blocked by abattis and screened by covering fire.
Union Major-General Frederick Steele’s division attempted to turn the Confederate right flank but was repulsed by Confederate artillery fire while they advanced on a narrow front. Union Major-General Morgan Lewis Smith was wounded by a sharpshooter and had to give up his divisional command.

Missouri. Union evacuation of New Madrid.

Tennessee. Incident at Triune.

Tennessee. Union Brigadier-General Samuel Powhatan Carter fought a skirmish at Perkins’ Mill and Elk Fork.

Tennessee. Confederate Brigadier-General Nathan Bedford Forrest’s raiders ended their wrecking of the Nashville & Northwestern Railroad. They reached McKenzie and headed south across the swampy bottoms of the swollen Obion River, using an abandoned causeway to avoid the floods. Rather than aiming directly for the Tennessee River, he decided to move between the Union columns that were converging on his force and to escape pursuit by a confusing series of rapid movements and attacks. The sense of panic among his pursuers and local Union garrisons began to intensify as confusion grew.
At Columbus, Union Brigadier-General Thomas Alfred Davies had been alarmed by raiders approaching within ten miles of the fortified post. Rumours that 40,000 Confederates were heading for the town led him to spike the guns at New Madrid and Island No 10 and he began to load as much as possible of the $13 million worth of supplies steamboats at the Columbus wharf.
Downriver at Memphis, Union Major-General Stephen Augustus Hurlbut put the city under strict martial law. His garrison had been reduced to provide men for the Vicksburg expedition and he also feared for the security of the major base.
Meanwhile, Union Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant organised forces to help Brigadier-General Jeremiah Cutler Sullivan close in on Forrest’s raiders. One Union force left Fort Henry, while a second left Corinth. Sullivan abandoned his fruitless searches east of Jackson and began moving northwards. His two brigades were joined by the third which had remained to garrison Jackson. Sullivan expected the three-pronged advance to converge and trap Forrest within a day.

Tennessee. Confederate Colonel John Hunt Morgan and his raiders were passing close to Louisville when they encountered a Union force at Muldraugh’s Hill. A brief skirmish forced the Union troops to withdraw.

Tennessee. Union Major-General William Starke Rosecrans and the Army of the Cumberland left Nashville with about 45,000 men to attack General Braxton Bragg’s Army of the Tennessee near Murfreesboro. The left column under Major-General Thomas Leonidas Crittenden’s Corps (14,500 men) advanced southeastwards parallel to the Nashville & Chattanooga railroad, passing through La Vergne and south of Smyrna. The centre wing of 16,000 men under Major-General Alexander McDowell McCook marched southwards along the Nolensville Turnpike to Nolensville, south to Triune, and then eastward to Murfreesboro. The right wing of 13,500 men under Major-General George Henry Thomas (less two divisions detached) moved south along the Wilson Turnpike and the Franklin Turnpike, parallel to the Nashville & Decatur Railroad, then eastward through Nolensville and along the same route used by Crittenden south of the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad. The separation of the three columns was designed to achieve a turning movement against Confederate Lieutenant-General William Joseph Hardee’s Corps at Triune, about twenty miles west of Murfreesboro.
The Union march was detected immediately by Brigadier-General Joseph Wheeler’s Confederate cavalry and he attempted to delay and harass the advance. Confederate General Braxton Bragg decided to concentrate his army at Murfreesboro. Bragg ordered Hardee’s Corps to march back from Triune to Murfreesboro where Lieutenant-General Leonidas Polk’s Corps of two divisions was already in position on the west bank of the river. A detached division from Hardee’s Corps under Major-General John Cabell Breckinridge already occupied the low hills east of the river. Confederate Brigadier-General John Porter McCown’s division was recalled from near Readyville, twelve miles to the east. None of the troops were ordered to construct field fortifications as Bragg expected a mobile campaign.

Virginia. USS Anacostia, Acting Master Nelson Provost, seized the schooner Exchange in the Rappahannock River.

Occoquan, Virginia. Confederate Major-General James Ewell Brown Stuart decided to extend his raid north of the Rappahannock River with the hope of still being able to move north of the Occoquan. The Confederate cavalry skirmished several times with the 2^nd Pennsylvania Cavalry and 17^th Pennsylvania Cavalry between Bacon Race Church and Selectman’s Ford near Occoquan. The Confederates captured 100 men and inflicted a further 20 casualties. Continuing their pursuit across the Occoquan, the 5^th Virginia Cavalry under Colonel Thomas Lafayette Rosser, and two guns under Major John Pelham, overran the Union camps at Occoquan. Stuart reunited his three brigades and burned the stores that could not be removed. After dark, the column reached Burke’s Station on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad and prevented the telegraph operator from raising the alarm. Stuart’s own telegraph operator read messages directing the Union forces against him and then sent a humiliating message of his own devising to the Union Quartermaster-General in Washington, DC. The raid caused consternation and humiliation in equal measure to the Union forces trying to pursue Stuart’s raiders.
