Rosecrans’ West Virginia Campaign
Kansas. Skirmish at Fort Scott.
Illinois. Union Brigadier-General Ulysses Simpson Grant assumed command of the District of Southeast Missouri with headquarters at Cairo. This sector was of extreme strategic importance, lying at the confluence of the Mississippi and the Ohio River, and not far from the junction with the Missouri. The Confederates were gathering troops and building fortifications on the banks of the rivers south of Cairo.
Maryland. USS Dana, Acting Master’s Mate Ely, captured the blockade-running schooner T J Evans off Clay Island with a cargo including blankets, surgical instruments, and ordnance supplies.
Missouri. Expedition to Jefferson County began. Capture of St Joseph.
Bennett’s Mills, Missouri, or Bennightt’s Mills. Union Home Guards were attacked by a Confederate force at Bennett’s Mills and reported 3 men killed and 6 wounded.
Virginia. Skirmishes at Blue Creek, Gauley Bridge, Boone Court House, and Burlington. At Boone Court House, six Union soldiers were reported wounded in a clash with Confederates.

USA: The District of Ironton was discontinued. It was replaced in scope by the more extensive District of Southeast Missouri.
USA: The District of Southeast Missouri was established in the Western Department, comprising Bird’s Point, Missouri, and Cairo and Mound City, Illinois.
