**“Enchantress” Case concluded**

East Kentucky Operations

USA. The trial of the crew of the Enchantress, captured on 22 July 1861, was concluded as a test case for the status of Confederate privateers. The Confederates had ordered a high-ranking Union prisoner to be held as a hostage for the crew of the Enchantress and of the Savannah, captured on 3 June. An effort by the US government to convict the privateer crews as pirates was not upheld and they were ruled to be prisoners of war. The judgment of the case largely ended the Confederate practice of privateering.

Kentucky. The Confederate Army of Central Kentucky was reinforced by the Army of the Kanawha, which arrived from western Virginia under Brigadier-General John Buchanan Floyd. They joined Brigadier-General Simon Bolivar Buckner’s 4,000 men at Bowling Green. With the growing concentration of forces now at Bowling Green, General Albert Sidney Johnston took direct command of the army. A further 4,000 men were still operating at Cumberland Gap and in eastern Kentucky under Brigadier-General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer, and 11,000 men were under Major-General Leonidas Polk guarding the river defences at Columbus.

Maryland. Union Brigadier-General Joseph Hooker engaged Confederate batteries near Budd’s Ferry.

Missouri. Expedition to Fulton by Union Colonel Chester Harding (15th Missouri Infantry).

Missouri. Concerned by the excesses and reported incompetence and suspected corruption of Union Major-General John Charles Frémont’s command in Missouri, President Abraham Lincoln had given two sets of orders to his representative, Brigadier-General Samuel Ryan Curtis. The orders were for Frémont to be relieved and for Major-General David Hunter to replace him if Frémont had not already won or was on the verge of winning a battle. Frémont’s popularity and political influence were too great for him to be removed while he was in the process of delivering a victory. However, if there was no sign of immediate success, Curtis was to deliver the orders to Hunter to take command.

Virginia. The first element of the naval expedition to Port Royal, South Carolina, departed from Hampton Roads. These were 25 coal and ammunition vessels accompanied by two warships, the USS Vandalia and the USS Gem of the Sea.
