Confederate Invasion of New Mexico

Missouri. Missouri Home Guards skirmished with Confederates at Lane’s Prairie, near Rolla. Union losses were reported as two or three men wounded and Confederate losses as one killed and three wounded.

Fort Fillmore, New Mexico Territory, also known as San Augustine Springs. Fort Fillmore was established on 23 September 1851 by Lieutenant-Colonel Dixon Stansbury Miles and troops from the 3rd US Infantry based at Fort Bliss. It was named after US President Millard Fillmore. Its purpose was to control hostile Apaches and it became a stop on both the Butterfield Overland Mail Route from 1857 to 1861 and the El Paso-Fort Yuma Stage Line. At the outbreak of war, the fort was garrisoned by Major Issac Lynde with seven companies.
At sunset, Confederate Lieutenant-Colonel John Robert Baylor ordered his artillery and cavalry to come forward to reinforce him while the rest of his command moved into positions to attack Fort Fillmore. The Confederates managed to capture 85 of the fort’s horses which provided most of the garrison’s transportation. Fearing an immediate attack and being cut off, Lynde abandoned the post overnight after destroying the ammunition and supplies in the citadel. Lynde retreated northeastwards across the dry Organ Mountains towards Fort Stanton via San Augustine Springs. The Confederates occupied the fort until forced out on 8 July 1862 by the 1st California Cavalry under Lieutenant-Colonel Edward E Eyre. It was abandoned by the Union on 10 October 1862.
