Confederate Invasion of New Mexico

St Augustine Springs, New Mexico Territory, also known as Fort Fillmore. Confederates under Lieutenant-Colonel John R Baylor’s captured dozens of straggling members of the Union garrison who had abandoned Fort Fillmore. Union Major Isaac Lynde’s command was reduced from seven hundred to one hundred men in their desperate retreat. The garrison eventually ran out of water and was forced to surrender at San Augustine Springs without firing a shot. Lynde was subsequently dropped from the army rolls on 25 November 1861 because of his failure. The prisoners were paroled and Baylor concentrated his Confederate battalion at Fort Fillmore. The two hundred Confederates had captured two guns, 200 cavalry mounts, 3,000 head of cattle, and paroled nearly seven hundred captured men. Baylor re-equipped his command with captured rifles and equipment. The Confederate victory strengthened local sentiment towards the secession of New Mexico Territory, a move which had been ratified by two conventions in March 1861.
