Union Post War Organisation
27 June 1865-31 December 1865
The first major post-war reorganisation of the US Regular Army and the remaining Union armies was implemented. The majority of US Volunteer formations were either already mustered out or preparing to do so. This greatly reduced the need for officers and generals to command them and simplified the structure of the high command. Many US Regular Army officers returned to their former profession, joined by a number of US Volunteers officers who wished to continue their military careers. The size and scope of field forces were rapidly reduced, although large garrisons were maintained in the devastated Southern states to keep order and assert the policies of Reconstruction,
The main organisational adjustment was the subordination of all territorial and field commands to one of the five Military Divisions that now spanned the entire nation. The five Military Divisions were assigned to the five serving Major-Generals of the US Regular Army.
The number of subordinate Departments was reduced and their locations were reconfigured. Most of their subordinate Districts and Sub-Districts were discontinued. Organisations were religned more closely to state borders, in order to simplify the tasks of administration and maintenance of order alongside civilian authorities during the Reconstruction of the former seceded states.
To achieve this reorganisation, the Military Division of the Missouri, the Military Division of the James, the Middle Military Division, and the Military Division of the Southwest were all discontinued. Into their place came the Military Division of the Atlantic, the Military Division of the Gulf, the Military Division of the Mississippi, the Military Division of the Pacific, and the Military Division of the Tennessee.
