Siege of Petersburg
Schofield’s North Carolina Operations
Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign – South Carolina
Sheridan’s March to Lynchburg
Alabama. Reconnaissance from Gravelly Springs to Florence ended.
Natural Bridge, Florida. Union Brigadier-General John Newton had undertaken a joint expedition to engage Confederate troops that had attacked Union garrisons at Cedar Keys and Fort Myers and were now reported to be encamped near St Marks. The Navy had trouble getting its ships up the St Marks River. The 2nd USCT Infantry and 99th USCT Infantry advanced and, after finding one bridge destroyed, started before dawn to cross the river at Natural Bridge in Leon County. The troops initially pushed back the Confederates forces of Major-General Samuel Jones but could not drive them away from the bridge. The Confederate forces comprised 1,000 men from the Kilcrease Artillery, Dunham’s Battery, Abell’s Battery, 9th Florida Cavalry, 1st Florida Militia, Barwick’s Company Reserves; Hodges Company Reserves; Company A, Milton Light Artillery, Companies A, B, and F and Reserves and reinforcements from Georgia. These volunteers were mostly teenagers from the nearby Florida Military and Collegiate Institute and elderly men. The Confederates were protected by breastworks and guarded all of the approaches as well as the bridge itself. The action at Natural Bridge lasted most of the day but, being unable to take the bridge after three attacks, the Union troops retreated to the protection of the fleet. This action prevented the Union from capturing the Florida capital of Tallahassee, the only Confederate capital east of the Mississippi River never to be captured by Union forces during the war. Union casualties were reported as 148 and Confederate losses are unknown. (CWSAC Formative Battle – Confederate Victory)
North Carolina. Union forces under Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman departed from Cheraw, South Carolina, and headed for Fayetteville, sixty miles distant. The troops were ordered to show more forbearance to the population of North Carolina than had been seen in South Carolina. Whereas South Carolina was viewed as a hotbed of ardent secessionism, there were extensive areas of North Carolina that remained loyal to the Union.
South Carolina. Expedition from Cheraw to Florence ended.
South Carolina. USS Jonquil, Acting Ensign Charles H Hanson, was damaged by a torpedo while clearing obstructions and torpedoes from the Ashley River near Charleston. USS Jonquil had already secured three torpedoes when the fourth torpedo exploded amidships and knocked nine men overboard. The vessel was completely flooded. USS Jonquil‘s hull was not seriously damaged and the vessel was salvaged to resume dragging operations the following day.
Tennessee. Reconnaissance from Cumberland Gap ended.
Virginia. Union Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan’s expedition suspended its progress towards Lynchburg, which was reported to be too strongly held to be taken by cavalry alone. Brigadier-General George Armstrong Custer’s cavalry division was ordered instead to wreck the railroad from Charlottesville to a point about sixteen miles from Lynchburg, and from there to head for the James River. Brigadier-General Thomas Casimer Devin’s cavalry division was sent immediately towards the James River to destroy the James River Canal, and all the mills along its banks near Goochland Court House. After completing these wrecking missions, the two divisions were expected to reunite to cross the James and rejoin the Army of the Potomac near Petersburg.
Virginia. Confederate General Robert Edward Lee continued to defend his positions around Petersburg, but his Army of Northern Virginia was weakening daily through desertion, disease, and shortage of food and supplies. He was outnumbered by the Union armies under Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant by about 125,000 men to 50,000 men. After the destruction of Confederate Lieutenant-General Jubal Anderson Early’s command in the Shenandoah Valley, Lee realised that perhaps as many as 50,000 more men under Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan, including two strong cavalry divisions, would soon be available to join Grant’s army at Petersburg. Furthermore, Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman was marching almost unopposed through North Carolina and there was little prospect of him being halted by General Joseph Eggleston Johnston’s makeshift forces.
Lee had to act to avoid being surrounded and crushed before these additional forces arrived. He asked Major-General John Brown Gordon to review the options for the army’s future survival. Gordon gave three recommendations, in decreasing order of preference. The first option was to offer peace terms to the enemy. The second option was to evacuate Richmond and Petersburg and march southwards to link up with Johnston in North Carolina; the combined armies would aim to defeat Sherman and then Grant in turn. The third option was to fight for a local advantage at Petersburg which would be decisive enough to disrupt the Union preparations for an offensive. It would also gain time for an orderly and unopposed withdrawal to be prepared.
Lee rejected the first choice for political reasons and rejected the second because the army was now largely immobile and poorly supplied. Gordon had the impression that Lee was still considering those options when he was summoned back to headquarters and Lee told him that the third option was the only one available to the army. Gordon was instructed to work on a plan to deliver a last effective blow that might save the army and with it, the failing Confederacy.
Virginia. USS Commodore Read, USS Yankee, USS Delaware, and USS Heliotrope proceeded up the Rappahannock River to support troops conducting a raid near Fredericksburg.
