March 3 1865 Friday

Siege of Petersburg

Schofield’s North Carolina Operations

Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign – South Carolina

Sheridan’s March to Lynchburg

USA. Before adjourning, the 38th US Congress established the Federal Bureau for the Relief of Freedmen and Refugees. The mission of the Bureau was to manage and supervise all abandoned lands controlled by the United States and to assist refugees and freed slaves.

USA. The US Congress authorised officially the post of Chief of Staff to the General-in-Chief of the US Army, with the grade of Brigadier-General. Brigadier-General USV John Aaron Rawlins held the position until 1869, but his commission as Brigadier-General in the US Regular Army was never confirmed.

Alabama. Skirmish at Decatur.

Florida. A Union naval squadron of twelve steamers and four schooners led by Commander Robert W Schufeldt joined troops under Brigadier-General John Newton for an expedition to St Marks Fort below Tallahassee. Shallow water prevented the ships from approaching the Fort, but they blockaded the mouth of the St Marks River.

Florida. USS Honeysuckle, Acting Master James J Russell, sighted the sloop Phantom as she attempted to enter the Suwannee River. An armed boat from USS Honeysuckle overhauled and captured the blockade runner with a cargo of bar iron and liquor.

Georgia. Skirmish near Tunnel Hill as Confederate cavalry attacked a party of Union troops who were repairing telegraph wires.

Louisiana. James M Wells became provisional Governor of Louisiana.

Louisiana. USS Glide, Acting Master L S Fickett, captured the schooner Malta in Vermilion Bayou with a cargo of cotton.

Mississippi. Expedition from Memphis, Tennessee, into northern Mississippi began.

Missouri. Expedition from Bloomfield for 25 miles into Dunklin County began.

Missouri. Skirmish at Bloomfield.

North Carolina. Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston had directed the Army of Tennessee to move by rail from Chester through Greensboro and Raleigh to Smithfield. Their movements had been delayed by a shortage of railroad rolling stock, which was already strained in supplying the army at Petersburg, Virginia. It was also necessary to leave sufficient transportation at Chester to await the arrival of the troops there. The arrival of a further 4,000 men of the Army of Tennessee from Mississippi was still awaited. Johnston’s cavalry force numbered 4,000 men under Lieutenant-General Wade Hampton.

South Carolina. The South Carolina Militia was left behind in their home state as the mobile Confederate armies headed across the state line into North Carolina.

North Carolina. The Union Navy continued to clear the Cape Fear River of torpedoes and obstructions in order to open Wilmington as a base for sea supply, closer to Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman’s armies than the present base of Savannah, Georgia. As the river was cleared, light draft gunboats travelled inland to open communications with the army. Lieutenant-Commander Ralph Chandler of USS Lenapee proceeded up the North West Branch of the Cape Fear River to its junction with the Black River. Freed slaves in the locality informed Chandler that some of Sherman’s forces were nearby at Robeson, twenty miles from Fayetteville.

South Carolina. Incident at Himsboro.

South Carolina. Skirmish at Big Black Creek.

South Carolina. Skirmish at Blakeny’s.

South Carolina. Skirmish at Juniper Creek, near Cheraw.

South Carolina. Skirmish at Thompson’s Creek, near Cheraw.

South Carolina. Skirmish at Hornsboro.

South Carolina. After a lengthy delay caused by heavy rains, the main Union armies of Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman reached Cheraw. They found large stores of Confederate military supplies and settled down to rest for two days at the Pee Dee River before resuming their northward march into North Carolina.

Tennessee. Edwin H East became Acting Governor of Tennessee.

Tennessee. Expedition from Memphis into northern Mississippi began.

Tennessee. Reconnaissance from Cumberland Gap towards Jonesville, Virginia, began.

Virginia. Occupation of Charlottesville.

Virginia. Reconnaissance from Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, towards Jonesville began.

Virginia. Union operation against guerrillas around Warrenton Bealeton Station, Centreville, Salem, and Sulphur Springs began.

Virginia. Expedition began from Waynesboro to Winchester, as Union troops moved their prisoners taken at Waynesboro and elsewhere towards their permanent camps.

Virginia. US President Abraham Lincoln denied permission to Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant for informal meetings and social contacts to be conducted between senior officers of the Union and Confederate armies outside Petersburg, with a view to raising matters relating to a peace convention.

Charlottesville, Virginia. Union Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan pressed ahead with Brigadier-General George Armstrong Custer’s division from Rockfish Gap to occupy Charlottesville, eighteen miles distant on the Virginia Central Railroad. Union Brigadier-General Thomas Casimer Devin’s cavalry division followed behind from Staunton to Rockfish Gap.
