Spain. The Confederate raider CSS Stonewall, Captain Thomas Jefferson Page, made a second attempt to put out to sea from Ferrol. Heavy weather once again prevented a successful departure, so 40 tons of coal were off-loaded to make the ironclad more seaworthy.

CSA. Confederate Colonel Adam Rankin Johnson resigned. He had been appointed Brigadier-General on 6 September 1864, to rank from 1 June 1864, but his appointment was never confirmed by the Confederate Congress while he was a prisoner of war. On 21 August 1864, he had been blinded by an accidental shot from one of his own men during a skirmish at Grubb’s Crossroads, near Princeton, Kentucky. Left behind because of his injuries, he was captured and remained a prisoner in Fort Warren until he was exchanged near the war’s end. Despite his blindness, he attempted to return to active duty. He returned to Texas after being exchanged and was paroled in 1865. Despite being blind, he founded a town, established a company, and worked to harness the water power of the Colorado River.

District of Columbia. US President Abraham Lincoln departed from Washington, DC, with his wife and son, to confer with Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant and Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter at City Point. Lincoln travelled aboard the fast steamer River Queen, escorted by USS Bat. Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman was also summoned, in order to decide plans for the final campaigns against the Confederacy.

Louisiana. Expedition from Donaldsonville to Bayou Goula began.

Missouri. Reconnaissance from Warrensburg to Greenton and Columbus ended.

Missouri. Operation at Stephenson’s Mill ended.

North Carolina. Skirmish at Cox’s Bridge on the Neuse River.

North Carolina. Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived in Goldsboro and found that Major-General Jacob Dolson Cox had already arrived two days earlier with XXIII Corps from the direction of New Bern. Sherman was finally able to consolidate the forces which had marched north from South Carolina with those of Major-General John McAllister Schofield, which had marched inland from the coast of North Carolina. The Union X Corps (North Carolina) was re-established from Terry’s Provisional Corps to include all the troops in North Carolina not currently attached to one of the existing corps in Sherman’s armies. In effect, the reformed X Corps comprised the expeditionary forces that landed in January at Fort Fisher on the North Carolina coast. Sherman’s force now numbered six corps (X Corps and XXIII Corps in Schofield’s Army of the Ohio, XV Corps and XVIII Corps in Major-General Oliver Otis Howard’s Army of the Tennessee, and XIV Corps and XX Corps in Major-General Henry Warner Slocum’s Army of Georgia. They could field a total of almost 89,000 men far outnumbering all the Confederate forces available to oppose them.
Goldsboro was only eighty miles from Weldon, which was in turn more than halfway to the Confederate capital at Richmond. Sherman ordered his quartermasters and supply officers to replenish his ragged forces with clothes, food, ammunition, and other supplies in preparation for the final march to Virginia. He planned the final campaign to begin within twenty days. The two railroads from Goldsboro to the ports of New Bern and Wilmington were not fully repaired so Sherman enforced strict work schedules to ensure that these were made operational within two days. As conventional supply lines were restored, he discontinued his use of wide-ranging swarms of foragers and “bummers” that had enabled his armies to live largely off the land through Georgia and South Carolina and thus far into North Carolina, leaving a trail of depredation behind them.

North Carolina, Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman prepared to leave North Carolina for a few days and travelled aboard the steamer Russia to City Point, Virginia, for a meeting with US President Abraham Lincoln.

North Carolina. Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston withdrew his army across the Neuse River to Smithfield. Johnston assessed the strength of his command after the battle at Bentonville and notified General Robert Edward Lee that he no longer had the means to prevent further Union advances in North Carolina. He suggested that the time was close for the two armies to combine for a last-ditch attempt to halt the Union progress. Johnston was unsure whether even the combined armies could match any of the opposing armies.
Johnston had nominal command over Confederate territory far beyond North Carolina, but his effective field forces were now all gathered in that one state. The Army of Tennessee was led by Lieutenant-General Alexander Peter Stewart, with three corps under its control. I Corps was commanded by Major-General Daniel Harvey Hill, II Corps by General Braxton Bragg, and III Corps by Major-General Edward Cary Walthall. Between them, they counted fewer than 5,400 men, the size of a lone division in former times. Lieutenant-General William Joseph Hardee commanded a Corps of two divisions with 4,700 men, and Major-General Robert Frederick Hoke’s division, the main field force in North Carolina, had around 3,600 men in five brigades. Three composite brigades under Brigadier-General John Doby Kennedy, Colonel George P Harrison, and Brigadier-General Albert Gallatin Blanchard, added just over 2,150 men.

Virginia. Skirmish at Goose Creek.

Virginia. Confederate Major-General James Brown Gordon presented to General Robert Edward Lee his plan for a surprise attack on the Union lines that would force Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant to contract his positions and disrupt his plans to assault the Confederate works. Unknown to Lee and Gordon, Grant had already ordered an attack for 29 March and it was unclear whether Gordon’s attack would happen in time to forestall it or not. Gordon’s plan required a pre-dawn assault from the Confederate stronghold known as Colquitt’s Salient against Fort Stedman on Hare’s Hill, one of the fortifications in Union lines that encircled Petersburg. It was one of the closest spots to the Confederate works, with a few wooden chevaux de frise obstructions protecting it. A valuable supply depot on the US Military Railroad was less than a mile beyond the fort. Directly after capturing Fort Stedman and its artillery, Confederate soldiers would move north and south along the Union lines to clear the neighbouring fortifications and make way for the main attack, which would drive through the breakthrough to capture Grant’s headquarters and the main Union supply base at City Point, about ten miles to the northeast on the Appomattox River. The plan offered an opportunity to split the Union line, disrupt its supplies, and break the siege of Petersburg. The respite gained would allow breathing space and greater flexibility for future operations.
The assault force was made up of three divisions from Gordon’s II Corps (under Brigadier-General Clement Anselm Evans, Major-General Bryan Grimes, and Brigadier-General James Alexander Walker), reinforced by two brigades under Brigadier-General Matthew Whitaker Ransom and Brigadier-General William Henry Wallace from the division of Major-General Bushrod Rust Johnson (IV Corps) in close support. Two more brigades from Major-General Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox’s Division of III Corps were held in reserve. Opposing the Confederate attack was the Union IX Corps commanded by Major-General John Grubb Parke, which defended the first seven miles of works leading southward from the Appomattox River. Directly in Gordon’s front, they were clustered from north to south around Battery IX, Battery X, Fort Stedman, Battery XI, and Battery XII. Union Brigadier-General John Frederick Hartranft’s division (3/IX), was in reserve behind the siege lines. While Union Major-General George Gordon Meade was at City Point with Grant, so Parke was the senior commander of the Army of the Potomac in the field, although he was unaware of this responsibility until after Gordon’s attack started.
