February 3 1865 Friday
Battle of Rivers’ Bridge, SC (CWSAC Limited Battle Union Victory)
Hampton Roads Peace Conference
Siege of Petersburg
Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign – South Carolina
USA. A conference was held aboard a steamer at Hampton Roads, Virginia, to discuss peace proposals. US President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William Henry Seward met with Confederate Vice-President Alexander Hamilton Stephens, Senator Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter, and Assistant Secretary of War John A Campbell. The opportunity had been brought about by US Congressman Francis Preston Blair, who had discussed unofficially the possibility of a meeting with Jefferson Finis Davis. Lincoln reiterated there would be no peace until the rebellious states recognised the Federal government as the only national government and that the seceded States were subject to it. Lincoln and Seward also refused to condone any plan that permitted the continuance of slavery. For their part, the Confederates insisted on the recognition of the independence of the Confederate States. No concessions were made by either side and the meeting ended inconclusively.
Alabama. Skirmish with guerrillas at Ladd’s House in Hog Jaw Valley.
Alabama. The Confederate gunboats CSS Macon, Lieutenant Joel S Kennard, and CSS Sampson, Lieutenant William W Carnes, had been brought with difficulty up the shallow Upper Savannah River for safety by Captain William W Hunter. The absence of navigable water made it impossible for the vessels to assist in the defence of the city against the approach of Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman’s army from Savannah. Lacking a useful role, the crews were ordered to turn over their ammunition to the army at Augusta.
Florida. USS Matthew Vassar, Acting Master George F Hill, captured the blockade-running schooner John Hale off St Marks, with its cargo including lead, blankets, and rope.
Kansas. Reconnaissance against Kiowas and Comanches set out from Fort Larned to Buckner’s Branch in Lafayette County and the South Fork of Pawnee Creek,
Maryland. The state of Maryland became the 4th state to ratify the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, which abolished slavery.
Missouri. Reconnaissance against guerrillas in La Fayette County began.
New York. The state of New York became the 5th state to ratify the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, which abolished slavery.
North Carolina. Union Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter travelled aboard USS Shawmut as it engaged Fort Anderson to test the strength of the Confederate defences on the west bank of the Cape Fear River.
North Carolina. Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant requested the US Navy to keep two or three vessels on constant patrol between Cape Henry and the Cape Fear River during the transit of Major-General John McAllister Schofield’s XXIII Corps from Annapolis, Maryland, and Alexandria, Virginia, to North Carolina. Two steamers were assigned to protect the troop transports. In addition, several ironclad monitors that had moved to Charleston after the fall of Fort Fisher were requested to return to duty on the Cape Fear River. However, the more pressing demands of Charleston harbour prevailed and USS Montauk was the only monitor that was released for action near Wilmington.
South Carolina. Skirmish at Dillingham’s Cross Roads (Duck Branch).
South Carolina. Union Brigadier-General John Porter Hatch requested naval assistance to cruise the upper Broad River while his troops were at Pocotaligo. He believed that Confederate guerrillas in the vicinity of Boyd’s Neck or Bee’s Creek were planning to capture some of his transports.
Rivers’ Bridge, South Carolina, also known as Salkehatchie River, Hickory Hill, Owen’s Crossroads, Lawtonville, and Duck Creek. Confederate forces about 1,200 strong under Major-General Lafayette McLaws held the crossings of the Salkehatchie River against the advance of the right wing of Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman’s armies led by Major-General Oliver Otis Howard. Two Union brigades with 5,000 men under Major-General Francis Preston Blair waded across the swamp downstream and assaulted McLaws’ right. McLaws retreated toward Branchville after stalling Sherman’s advance for only one day. Union casualties were reported as 92 or 97 men (8 killed, 44 wounded, 45 captured and missing) and Confederate as 124 men (18 killed, 106 wounded), or as high as 170 in another report. (CWSAC Limited Battle Union Victory)
Tennessee. The Detachment Army of the Tennessee (XVI Corps), commanded by Major-General Andrew Jackson Smith was ordered to transfer from the Department of the Cumberland to the Military Division of West Mississippi for the impending operations against Mobile, Alabama.
Tennessee. The 7th Division of the Cavalry Corps, Military Division of the Mississippi, was ordered to transfer from the Department of the Cumberland to join the Military Division of West Mississippi for the impending operations against Mobile, Alabama.
Virginia. Command of the Cavalry Corps (Potomac) became vacant on the resignation of Brigadier-General David McMurtrie Gregg. Only one division of cavalry was operating with the Army of the Potomac as the other two were in the Shenandoah Valley. Command of the corps passed subsequently to Colonel John Irvin Gregg pending the return of Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan from the Shenandoah Valley with the two other divisions.
West Virginia. The state of West Virginia became the 6th State to ratify the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, which abolished slavery.
West Virginia. A Confederate force derailed a train on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad near Harper’s Ferry. The commanding Union officer accused the Lieutenant in charge of the train of dereliction of duty, due arising from the abuse of to drink and opium. The accused was summarily hanged without court martial.
