Alabama. The Union forces attacking Spanish Fort and Blakely were connected by a bridge across Bayou Minette/ Possession of the bridge enabled Union Major-General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby and Major-General Frederick Steele to act together against the Confederate defences. Canby requested boats and sailors to move troops to support assaults on Battery Tracy and Battery Huger, key points in Mobile’s defences. A naval battery of three 30-pounder Parrott rifles commanded by Lieutenant-Commander Gillis, former captain of the torpedoed ironclad USS Milwaukee, was landed on the banks of the Blakely River and moved forward to join in the bombardment of Spanish Fort.

Alabama. Recovering from the reverse at Montevallo, Union Brigadier-General John Thomas Croxton’s cavalry brigade captured Tuscaloosa. A brigade of Confederate Brigadier-General James Ronald Chalmers’ cavalry division prevented Croxton’s attempts to rejoin Major-General James Harrison Wilson’s cavalry in his advance towards Selma. Croxton’s isolated force retreated instead towards Elyton.

Arkansas. Reconnaissance to Bartholomew Bayou and Pine Bluff ended.

Florida. Skirmish at East River Bridge.

Georgia. Expeditions to Dalton and Spring Place ended. Incident at Coosawattee River.

Louisiana. Incident at Grand Bayou.

North Carolina. USS Shokokon arrived at Winton and was stationed near a high bluff where they destroyed an abandoned fortification. Fifty soldiers were sent from Winton to hold the bluff until Commander William Henry Macomb’s naval expedition had passed it safely.

Virginia Union Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter accompanied US President Abraham Lincoln up the James River to Richmond on board his flagship USS Malvern and escorted by the USS Bat. When river obstructions and torpedoes blocked the flagship’s way near Fort Darling, the two men embarked in Porter’s rowing barge, accompanied by three aides and a boat crew of twelve. They towed thirty marines behind in a tug. When the tug ran aground, the single rowboat continued unescorted. The party landed about one block above Libby Prison, but no Union soldiers were in sight. Porter formed ten sailors armed with carbines into a guard and left two sailors with the barge. Six marched in front and four in the rear, and in the middle with the President and the Rear Admiral were Captain Penrose, Lincoln’s military aide, Captain Adams USN, and Lieutenant Clemens of the US Signal Corps. The Presidential party walked the last two miles to Capitol Square, followed by silent but exultant crowds of freed slaves. When they passed Libby Prison they encountered larger crowds of sullen civilians, and then finally a single Union soldier. A mounted escort was sent for and soon arrived. Passing the Governor’s mansion, the Presidential party finally reached the former mansion of Confederate President Jefferson Finis Davis, where Union Major-General Godfrey Weitzel had established his headquarters. After a tour of the captured city with Weitzel and other senior officers, Lincoln slept overnight on USS Malvern which moored at Rocketts Landing after successfully evading the obstacles in the river. Union Vice-Admiral David Glasgow Farragut also arrived in the Confederate capital.

Virginia. The Union troops moving into Richmond found that the Confederates’ ironclads and gunboats had been blown up, with the exception of the unfinished ram CSS Texas and the tugboat CSS Beaufort. The ships they found destroyed included the ironclads CSS Virginia II, CSS Richmond, and CSS Fredericksburg; along with the wooden warships CSS Nansemond, CSS Hampton, CSS Roanoke, CSS Torpedo, CSS Shrapnel, and the Naval Academy’s school-ship CSS Patrick Henry. The wrecks partly obstructed the channel and needed to be raised or further destroyed before safe passage could be achieved.

Virginia. Fifty Midshipmen at the Confederate Naval Academy, under the command of Confederate Lieutenant William H Parker arrived in Danville with the archives of the Confederate government and the bullion of the Treasury. The train carrying President Jefferson Finis Davis and much of the government crossed the Roanoke River and reached Clover Station, two-thirds of the way to Danville. It was followed by more trains filled with civilians and officials in a heightened state of excitement, along with stores, official records and the random cargo of a fleeing government. The last train passed through at midday. Davis reached Danville during the afternoon and immediately drew on his military experience to inspect the fortifications of the city, making recommendations to improve them ready for the arrival of the army of Confederate General Robert Edward Lee. He also ordered the collection of supplies and provisions.

Virginia. Confederate Rear Admiral Raphael Semmes arrived at Danville by train from Richmond with his naval detachment. Semmes was presently commissioned Brigadier-General and placed in command of the defences around Danville. These defences were manned by 400 sailors who had been organised into an artillery brigade, and by two battalions of infantry.

Virginia. The forces of Union Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan’s cavalry and Confederate Major-General William Henry Fitzhugh Lee’s rear guards skirmished at Tabernacle Church (also known as Beaver Pond Creek) and at Amelia Court House. Seven miles to the southwest of Amelia Court House, Sheridan’s forces occupied Jetersville and Burkeville, blocking the Confederates’ direct route to the Richmond & Danville Railroad and south-westward towards North Carolina. Confederate cavalry engaged Brigadier-General Henry Eugene Davies’ rear-guard in a running battle through Amelia Springs, but Davies’ force still managed to link up with Union reinforcements near Jetersville. Sheridan’s cavalry and Union Major-General Charles Griffin’s V Corps were gathering at Jetersville, blocking the preferred Confederate line of retreat. It was expected that the Union II Corps under Brigadier-General Andrew Atkinson Humphreys and VI Corps under Major-General Horatio Gouverneur Wright would also arrive by nightfall, ensuring that a Confederate breakthrough would be impossible.
By noon, the starving and exhausted forces of Confederate General Robert Edward Lee were converging on Amelia Court House along the Richmond & Danville Railroad. The separate columns of Lieutenant-General James Longstreet and Lieutenant-General Richard Heron Anderson came together as Longstreet’s column crossed the Appomattox. Lee rode with Longstreet and some order and morale were gradually restored to Anderson’s survivors from the disaster at Five Forks. When Lee and his forces arrived at Amelia Court House, five miles from the river, the supply train was found to contain ordnance, ammunition, caissons, and harnesses, but no food rations. Lee had planned in advance for 350,000 rations to be sent there from Richmond, but no transportation had been available to move them. His army of 33,000 men had covered forty miles in forty hours in expectation of receiving food rations but none could be obtained. Lee ordered a halt for foraging efforts to be made and to bring up a pontoon bridge needed to cross the rain-swollen rivers ahead. He also wanted to wait for the third part of his army under Lieutenant-General Richard Stoddert Ewell to join the main body.
The direct route to Danville was now blocked by Union cavalry around Jetersville and Burkeville, so the next available source of supplies was Lynchburg. The Confederate Commissary General promised Lee that he would send 80,000 rations forward from Lynchburg to Farmville, 25 miles to the west of Amelia. Lee decided to move towards Farmville, with his first destination being Rice’s Station to the southwest. During the evening, Lee heard that Ewell was delayed by flooded bridges and did not expect to cross the Appomattox until after nightfall. Ewell was not expected to arrive at Amelia Court House until the morning. Lee extended the halt overnight, hoping that efforts to forage for food in the locality would be successful. While some troops received or found food, others deserted or became demoralised.
