April 30 1865 Sunday
Flight of the Confederate Government
Alabama. Union Major-General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby met Confederate Lieutenant-General Richard Taylor at Magee’s Farm, twelve miles from Mobile, to discuss an end to hostilities and the surrender of Confederate forces in Alabama, Mississippi, and eastern Louisiana. While Canby attended with his staff and a full brigade of troops paraded in full dress, Taylor arrived from Meridian with a single aide on a railroad handcart propelled by the muscles of two former slaves. They agreed to observe a truce while awaiting confirmation of the terms of the surrender, using the text of the first memorandum agreed between Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman and Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston. They were unaware that these terms had already been repudiated by the politicians and superseded by a less expansive agreement referring only to military matters.
Alabama. Expedition to Union Springs ended.
District of Columbia. The eight suspects in the Lincoln assassination plot who had been imprisoned on monitors USS Montauk and USS Saugus were transferred to the US Arsenal Penitentiary. This was also the site of their trial by a military tribunal that later returned its verdict on 30 June 1865.
Georgia. Expedition from Georgetown ended.
Indiana. US President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train arrived at Indianapolis.
