Virginia. Incidents at Cedar Bluff, Arthur’s Swamp, Laurel Hill (Henrico County), Fort Gilmer, Fort Harrison, Richmond, and Chaffin’s Farm.
Virginia. Union Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan relieved Brigadier-General William Woods Averell of his command for lack of aggression, and Brigadier-General James Harrison Wilson was transferred away on 30 September to take up a major new cavalry command in the western theatre. Their cavalry divisions in the Shenandoah were taken over by Brigadier-General George Armstrong Custer and Colonel William Henry Powell respectively.
New Market Heights, Virginia. By dawn, Confederate General Robert Edward Lee had collected 10,000 men in ten brigades opposite Fort Gilmer and Fort Harrison and planned to recapture the positions, which were vital to the defence of Richmond. At 3 pm, Lieutenant-General Richard Heron Anderson led the desperate counterattack, but it was marred by faulty coordination and failed. Two further counter-attacks were defeated by Brigadier-General George Jerrison Stannard’s division (1/XVIII) although Stannard was severely wounded. Confederate Brigadier-General John Dunovant was killed in the fighting for Fort Harrison. The Union forces strengthened their entrenchments in their new positions and the Confederates were forced to fall back to erect a new and shorter line of works that cut off the captured Fort Harrison and Fort Gilmer. As Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant had anticipated, Lee had been forced to shift large numbers of troops to meet these threats against Richmond, thereby weakening his lines further south at Petersburg. Total casualties for these operations were estimated at least 4,430 men in total. Of 19,639 Union troops engaged, 3,327 men were casualties, while the Confederates lost an estimated 2,000 men out of 10,836.
Peebles’ Farm, Virginia. also known as Poplar Springs Church, Wyatt’s Farm, Chappell’s House, Pegram’s Farm, or Vaughan Road. Two divisions of the Union IX corps under Major-General John Grubb Parke (Brigadier-General Orlando Bolivar Willcox’s 1/IX and Brigadier-General Robert Brown Potter’s 2/IX) marched behind two divisions of the V Corps under Major-General Gouverneur Kemble Warren (Brigadier-General Charles Griffin’s 1/V and Brigadier-General Romeyn Beck Ayres’ 2/V) towards Poplar Springs Church and then onto the Vaughan Road. Protection on the left flank and rear was provided by Brigadier-General David McMurtrie Gregg’s cavalry division.
Warren was in overall command as he aimed to attack the fortifications guarding the Boydton Plank Road, at Globe Tavern, and along the Squirrel Level Road. The ultimate objectives were to reach the Southside Railroad and to cut the Boydton Plank Road. Confederate General Robert Edward Lee had already withdrawn the division of Major-General Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox and sent it to join the battle at Fort Harrison, so Warren was facing greatly reduced forces in Lieutenant-General Ambrose Powell Hill’s III Corps. The Union attack forced Lee to recall Wilcox’s division from its march towards Fort Harrison. Warren and Gregg moved along the Poplar Springs Road toward the segment of the Squirrel Level line in the area of Peebles’ Farm and Poplar Springs Church. Warren’s column was stalled halfway by skirmishers from Confederate Major-General Wade Hampton’s cavalry division.
Around 1 pm, Union Brigadier-General Charles Griffin led a stronger attack near Poplar Springs Church and overran Fort Archer on the extreme Confederate flank, netting a hundred prisoners at Pegram’s Farm. The neighbouring Squirrel Level line broke but the few Confederates fled so quickly that the number of prisoners captured was low. Warren halted the attack to fortify the new position in order not to advance too far ahead of the IX Corps. Parke’s IX Corps moved up on Warren’s left but did not make an effective link with the V Corps flank.
Expecting Griffin to advance on his right flank, Potter pressed back the Confederate skirmishers but had to go back on to the defensive when support did not appear from Griffin. Potter’s men were then driven back before they could get fully organised for defence, rallying around the 7th Rhode Island Infantry near the Pegram house. The new line was held firmly by Colonel John Irwin Curtin’s brigade (1/2/IX) and the Confederate advance was checked when Griffin’s division closed up on the right flank. Confederate Major-General Henry Heth’s Division (III Corps) mounted a counterattack at about 4.30 pm and routed part of Potter’s division. Warren, who had originally feared a stronger counterattack, now helped rally the broken IX Corps units, checked Heth’s attack and the fighting died down. The Union forces consolidated their positions around Peebles’ Farm and entrenched a refused left flank along the Squirrel Level Road. The Union army extended the siege lines past the Peebles’ Farm area, bringing them closer to their primary goal of severing the Boydton Plank Road.
