Japan. Robert H Pruyn, US Minister to Japan, requested Captain Cicero Price to sail the USS Jamestown to the port of Kanagawa, which the Japanese were threatening to close to foreign commerce.
Alabama. Incident at Courtland Road.
Alabama. Union Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut issued instructions to attach a torpedo to the bow of each of his warships, in response to Confederate torpedo activity in Mobile Bay.
Dakota Territory. The Montana Territory was organised, comprising land previously forming part of the Dakota Territory.
Georgia. Operation at Dallas began.

Dallas, Georgia. Union Major-General John Alexander Logan’s XV Corps (Tennessee) finally arrived near Dallas by daylight after a challenging night march from the west. They discovered the left wing of a Confederate five-mile entrenched line. Both sides began to probe for weaknesses and skirmished continually while they strengthened their own defences.
Illinois. Union Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter reached his headquarters at Cairo after the unsuccessful Red River campaign.
Louisiana. Union Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks’ Red River expeditionary force reached Donaldsonville, ending its disappointing operations along the Red River. The Union army had crossed the Atchafalaya at Simsport on 20 May. Meanwhile, Major-General Andrew Jackson Smith’s Detachment of the Army of the Tennessee. had embarked on transports for Vicksburg, Mississippi, under the protection of gunboats.
Missouri. Skirmish with guerrillas at Lane’s Prairie in Maries County.
Montana Territory. The Montana Territory was organised, comprising land previously forming part of the Dakota Territory. The first Governor of Montana Territory was Sidney Edgerton.
New York. Commander John C Carter of the USS Michigan reported from Buffalo that the cruise of his iron side-wheeler on Lake Erie had discovered no foundation for rumours of Confederate plans to launch maritime attacks on Lake Erie.
South Carolina. Skirmishes at the Ashepoo River and Willstown,
South Carolina. Incident at Fort Chapman.
South Carolina. A Union expedition up the Ashepoo and South Edisto Rivers to cut the Charleston and Savannah Railroad landed a detachment of Marines and howitzers during the morning and opened fire on Willstown. The naval force was unable to contact Union Brigadier-General William Birney to coordinate a further attack and withdrew the following morning. The transport Boston ran aground in the Ashepoo near Fort Chapman and was destroyed to prevent capture.
Virginia. Expedition to Lynchburg began.

Virginia. Skirmish at Hanovertown.
Virginia. Late in the afternoon, Union Major-General Philip Henry Sheridan set out with the cavalry divisions of Brigadier-General Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert and Brigadier-General David McMurtrie Gregg to open a way towards the Pamunkey River. They were followed by the infantry division (1/VI) of Brigadier-General David Allen Russell. While they rode overnight for the Pamunkey River near Hanovertown, the rest of the Army of the Potomac commenced an overnight march behind them. Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant planned to cross the front of Confederate General Robert Edward Lee’s army with the aim of then turning the Confederate right flank. The final destination of the twenty-mile march was the important crossroads of Cold Harbor. The army moved in two columns, with the V Corps and IX Corps heading for the crossing at Hanovertown, while the II Corps and VI Corps aimed for a nearer crossing four miles upstream.
Virginia. After replacing Major-General Franz Sigel in command of Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley, Major-General David Hunter renewed the Union offensive towards Lynchburg. He supplemented his supplies by permitting the troops to forage freely and to live off the bountiful farms of the region. Hunter was stationed at Cedar Creek with an infantry division under Brigadier-General Jeremiah Cutler Sullivan and a cavalry division under Major-General Julius Stahel.
While Hunter’s command departed first for Strasburg and late for Staunton, a second supporting column was to advance from Lewisburg in West Virginia (Brigadier-General William Woods Averell’s cavalry division and Brigadier-General George Crook’s infantry division). Hunter’s combined force totalled 11,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalrymen. The combined force would then aim for Lynchburg,
The departure of Confederate Major-General John Cabell Breckinridge’s division from the Shenandoah Valley to join the Army of Northern Virginia had left only Brigadier-General John Daniel Imboden’s brigade and local militiamen and Home Guards to confront Hunter. Imboden kept General Robert Edward Lee informed of Hunter’s movements but could do little to slow Hunter with his meagre forces.
Hunter set his sights firmly on Staunton, a key railroad and logistics centre for the Confederacy, and his quick advance, taking ten days to approach Staunton, caught the Confederates off guard. Lee turned to Brigadier-General William Edmondson Jones in southwestern Virginia for assistance, instructing Jones to open communications with Imboden. Jones departed for the Shenandoah Valley with roughly 4,000 infantrymen and dismounted cavalrymen, leaving his region with negligible defenders.
