Charleston Riot, IL

Red River Campaign

Arkansas Campaign

Forrest’s Second West Tennessee Raid

Alabama. Skirmish with guerrillas at Caperton’s Ferry.

Arkansas. Reconnaissance to Bellefonte began.

Arkansas. Skirmish at Danville.

Arkansas. Skirmish at Mount Elba.

Arkansas. Union Major-General Frederick Steele’s expeditionary force crossed the Ouachita River. The going was hard across endless ravines and bottomlands, which required corduroy roads to be improvised to enable the passage of wagons. The column took a three-day rest, awaiting news of the approach of Brigadier-General John Milton Thayer’s Frontier Division from Fort Smith.

California. Skirmish with Wileackee Indians at the Eel River. Union troops attacked a large party, killing sixteen men and capturing two women.

Illinois. Charleston was a town in Coles County about 120 miles southeast of the state capital at Springfield. It was a haven for Copperhead and anti-Abolitionist sentiments.  There had been unrest about appropriations for the war and restrictions on the freedom of speech and the press imposed by Union officials. Opposition to emancipation and calls for an armistice grew. On 1 August 1863, a crowd estimated at between 3,000 and 12,000 people attended a rally for free speech and peace. Anti-war Copperheads and members of the Knights of the Golden Circle were among the protestors. Over the coming months, soldiers billeted in the neighbourhood provoked tension and violence against the residents, resulting in a series of fatal incidents. On this date, large numbers of soldiers from the 54th Illinois Infantry clashed with civilian protesters. Weapons were discharged on both sides in a series of encounters. Six soldiers and three civilians were killed, and twelve men wounded. Except for the New York Draft Riots, this was the bloodiest incident of civil unrest during the war.

Kentucky. Operation in Eastern Kentucky began.

Kentucky. Confederate raiders burned a passenger train on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad at New Hope.

Louisiana. The state of Louisiana elected delegates to a constitutional convention under US President Abraham Lincoln’s “Ten Percent Plan.”

Louisiana. Union Brigadier-General Cuvier Grover’s division was left to hold Alexandria while Brigadier-General Andrew Jackson Smith’s men boarded transports to head for Grande Ecore along the Red River. Grand Ecore was sixty miles,or halfway, towards Shreveport. The other divisions of Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks’ army set out overland for Natchitoches. For the most part, Confederate Major-General Richard Taylor retreated ahead of the advancing Union expedition, harassing and skirmishing vigorously but avoiding an engagement. Outnumbered at least four to one and perhaps even five to one, Taylor fell back until he could receive reinforcements that had been promised from Texas and Arkansas.

Pennsylvania. The iron side-wheel steamer USS Michigan, Commander John C Carter, was prepared for active service and stationed at Erie after rumours were heard that the Confederates were planning a naval raid from Canada against cities on the Great Lakes.

South Carolina. USS Kingfisher, Acting Master John C Dutch, ran aground and was wrecked in St Helena Sound.

Tennessee. Operation at Sparta ended.

Tennessee. Skirmish at Obey’s River involving Union Brigadier-General Edward Henry Hobson.

Virginia. Union reconnaissance to Gloucester Court House to investigate rumours of a Confederate plot to capture oyster schooners.

Virginia. Union reconnaissance to Aldie and Middleburg began.

West Virginia. Skirmish at Bloomery Gap.

Union Organisation
