Azores. USS R R Cuyler, Commander Caldwell, USS Mackinaw, Commander Beaumont, and USS Gettysburg, Lieutenant R H Lamson, captured the blockade-running steamer Armstrong west of the Azores. USS R R Cuyler and USS Gettysburg, joined USS Montgomery to retrieve bales of cotton thrown overboard from Armstrong during the chase. USS Mackinaw had earlier in the day captured the brig Hattie E Wheeler with a cargo of sugar.

Tristan da Cunha. CSS Shenandoah, Lieutenant James Iredell Waddell, captured and burned the whaling bark Edward after transferring supplies and acquiring two small boats.

Alabama. Confederate Major-General Dabney Herndon Maury, commanding the garrison of Mobile, reported that the Union flagship USS Hartford and other heavy vessels had disappeared from Mobile Bay. Maury also commented that John P Halligan, builder of the torpedo boat Saint Patrick had created a valuable invention but that he seemed unlikely to use it aggressively in action. Maury requested a more intrepid officer to command Saint Patrick In January 1865, Saint Patrick was transferred to Maury’s authority and Lieutenant John T Walker CSN, was placed in command.

California. Operation at Trinity River Valley ended.

Florida. Boats from USS Pursuit, Acting Lieutenant George Taylor, captured the Peep O’Day near the Indian River, with a cargo of cotton.

Georgia. Skirmish near Statesboro.

Georgia. Skirmish at Station No 5 on the Georgia Central Railroad,

Georgia. Skirmish at Lumpkin’s Station.

Georgia. Skirmish at the Little Ogeechee River.

Waynesboro, Georgia, also known as Brier Creek. As Union Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman’s infantry marched southeast from Millen, Brigadier-General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick’s Cavalry Division, supported by two infantry brigades detached from Brigadier-General Absalom Baird’s division of XIV Corps, rode north-eastwards. Annoyed by Major-General Joseph Wheeler’s constant harassment, Kilpatrick set out with his full division to attack Waynesboro and to destroy Wheeler’s Confederate cavalry. Early in the morning, Kilpatrick advanced from Thomas’ Station six miles northward to burn the bridges over Brier Creek north and east of Waynesboro. Finding Wheeler’s Confederates deployed astride the road, Kilpatrick attacked, driving the Confederate skirmishers back. The Union force then came up against a line of breastworks, which they eventually overran. As the Union advance continued, they met more breastworks which required time to overcome. As the Union advance continued, they encountered even more defensive lines. After hard fighting, Wheeler’s outnumbered force retired into Waynesboro and lined another line of breastworks hastily erected in the town’s streets. Wheeler ordered a charge to gain time to withdraw across Brier Creek and to block the road to Augusta, which, appeared to be the objective of Sherman’s army. After furious fighting, the Union troops broke through the last barrier and Wheeler’s force hastily withdrew. Finally reaching his objective of Brier Creek, Kilpatrick burned the rail and wagon bridges and withdrew. The supporting infantry brigades marched toward Jacksonboro and rejoined the rest of Baird’s division, encamped at Alexander. They were followed that evening by Kilpatrick’s command, which camped at Old Church on the old Quaker Road. The Union lost 190 casualties from their force of 6,000 men. The Confederates lost 250 casualties from their force of 4,000 men. (CWSAC Formative Battle Union Victory)

Kansas. Skirmish at Cow Creek, fifteen miles east of Fort Zarah. Indians captured a wagon loaded with ammunition for the Fort.

Louisiana. Skirmish near Morganza on the New Texas Road.

Mississippi. Expedition to Vicksburg and Yazoo City ended.

Missouri. Operation at Waynesville ended.

South Carolina. Incidents at Church Bridge and Gardner’s Corners.

Tennessee. Incident in Monroe County.

Tennessee. Skirmish at Blockhouse No 7 on Overall’s Creek

Tennessee. Skirmish at Blockhouse No 4.

Tennessee. Skirmish at Bell’s Mills.

Tennessee. Skirmish at White’s Station near Memphis resulting in the capture of Union scouts.

Tennessee. While his army was operating against Nashville, Confederate General John Bell Hood decided that the destruction of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad and the disruption of the Union army supply depot at Murfreesboro would greatly help his cause. He sent Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest with an expedition of two cavalry divisions (Brigadier-General Abraham Buford and Brigadier-General William Hicks Jackson) to accomplish the task. Confederate Major-General William Brimage Bate’s infantry division (reinforced by two attached brigades, one from each of the other two corps) was also sent from Nashville to block the movement of Union reinforcements from Chattanooga to Nashville. Bate’s division attacked Blockhouse No 7 protecting the railroad crossing at Overall Creek at Murfreesboro, but Union forces beat off the attackers. Murfreesboro was garrisoned by 9,000 men under Major-General Lovell Harrison Rousseau and Major-General Gordon Granger. Although Hood’s manoeuvre prevented them from reinforcing the main Union army at Nashville, Forrest’s absence caused a proportionally greater weakening of Hood’s own forces outside Nashville. Union Major-General George Henry Thomas, at Nashville, advised Rousseau and Granger to remain at Murfreesboro to divert the Confederate forces.

Texas. USS Chocura, Lieutenant-Commander Meade, captured the schooner Lowood south of Velasco, with a cargo of cotton. Lowood was known as a notorious blockade runner and it was trapped after lengthy observation of its movements.

Texas. USS Pembina, Lieutenant-Commander James G Maxwell, seized the blockade-running Dutch brig Geziena Hilligonda near Brazos Santiago, with its cargo including medicines, iron, and cloth.

Virginia. Incident at Bermuda Hundred.

Virginia. Skirmish near Davenport Church.

Virginia. Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant ordered Major-General Benjamin Franklin Butler to begin his operations against Fort Fisher immediately, regardless of whether his “floating bomb” was ready. Butler delayed for a further ten days before loading his expedition onto transports at Hampton Roads.

Virginia. Union Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant began to prepare another offensive towards the Weldon Railroad near the North Carolina border, in order to sever enemy supply lines into Petersburg. The Union VI Corps began to disembark at City Point after travelling back to rejoin the Army of the Potomac from the Shenandoah Valley. When VI Corps reinforced the army, Major-General Gouverneur Kemble Warren’s V Corps would be gradually relieved from siege duties so that it could begin the new offensive in a few days’ time. The VI Corps completed its return to the Army of the Potomac on 6 December.
