Virginia. During the night, the Union II Corps, X Corps, and Brigadier-General David McMurtrie Gregg’s cavalry division, all under command of Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock, crossed the James River at Deep Bottom. Measures were taken to deceive the Confederates that Hancock’s II Corps was being transferred by sea transport to Washington, DC. His troops feigned boarding ships at City Point as a ruse, while the cavalry and artillery marched overland to the pontoon bridges at Deep Run. Hancock’s objective was to threaten Richmond, coordinating this diversion with a movement being made south of the James River against the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg. This extended demonstration was part of plans arising from the erroneous belief that Confederate defences along Deep Bottom Run and Bailey’s Creek had been weakened to a single division of 8,500 men by the transfer of strong reinforcements to the Shenandoah Valley.

Virginia. Skirmishes occurred at White’s Tavern, Charles City Road, New Market Road, Fussell’s Mill, Gravel Hill, Bailey’s Creek, Deep Bottom, Strawberry Plains, and Deep Run (or Deep Creek),

Virginia. USS Agawam, Commander Rhind, engaged three different Confederate batteries near Four Mile Creek on the James River. The ship was fired upon early in the afternoon but countered immediately and maintained a heavy fire for over four hours. It was finally forced to withdraw due to a shortage of ammunition.

Virginia. Ships of the Confederate James River Squadron, including CSS Virginia II, Commander John K Mitchell, CSS Fredericksburg, Commander Rootes, CSS Hampton, Lieutenant John W Murdaugh, CSS Nansemond, Lieutenant Charles W Hays, and CSS Drewry, Lieutenant William W Hall, shelled Union Army positions near Dutch Gap. They kept up the fire for over twelve hours to support Confederate troop movements in the area. The Union entrenchments were largely beyond the range of the guns and hidden by hills. Union gunboats emerged and took up a position below the James River barricade, but their guns could not reach the Confederate squadron. Union shore batteries took them under fire and the Confederates returned to their anchorages at nightfall.
