Paintsville, KY
Red River Campaign
Arkansas Campaign
Forrest’s Second West Tennessee Raid
Alabama. Skirmish near Decatur.
Alabama. Incident at Eight Mile Creek Bridge.
Arkansas. Skirmish at Indian Bay.
Arkansas. Skirmish on Spring River, eight miles west of Smithville.
Arkansas. Skirmish at Richland Creek.
Arkansas. Skirmish at Moscow.
Arkansas. Union Major-General Frederick Steele sprang his surprise march towards Camden, evacuating his positions at Prairie d’Ane undetected behind a strong rear-guard provided by Brigadier-General John Milton Thayer’s Frontier division. Confederate Major-General Sterling Price sent Brigadier-General John Sappington Marmaduke to pursue the Union column while Brigadier-General James Fleming Fagan and Brigadier-General Samuel Bell Maxey set out for Terre Rouge Creek to the east, where the Union fugitives had camped overnight. The Confederates were barely half the strength of their prey and were not strong enough to launch a decisive attack during two days of harassment.
Georgia. Reconnaissance from Rossville to Lafayette ended.
Kentucky. Reconnaissance to Lexington began.
Kentucky. Confederate raiders arrived at Columbus, which was protected by the gunboats USS Moose, Lieutenant-Commander LeRoy Fitch, USS Hastings, Acting Master John S Watson, and USS Fairy, Acting Master Henry S Wetmore. The Confederates were deterred by the presence of the gunboats and withdrew.
Paintsville, Kentucky. Confederate Colonel Ezekiel F Clay led his regiment of mounted infantry on a raid to Kentucky and was opposed by the forces of Union Colonel George W Gallup, consisting of the 14th Kentucky Infantry and 39th Kentucky Infantry, with reinforcements under Colonel C J True consisting of the 40th Kentucky Infantry and the 11th Michigan Cavalry. The Confederates attacked the Union position at Paintsville, but Gallup’s 750 men held their position.
Louisiana. Incidents at Blair’s Landing and Pleasant Hill Landing.
Louisiana. Transport vessels of the Union Red River expedition boats ran aground at Campti and came under enemy fire from Brigadier-General St John Richardson Liddell’s Louisiana troops, who had been harassing the convoy continually for two days. The convoy later joined Brigadier-General Nathaniel Banks’ army at Grand Ecore and the delivery of their supplies prevented the Red River Expedition from falling into serious difficulty.
Louisiana. Confederate Major-General Richard Taylor was left with just 5,000 men to screen the Red River line while General Edmund Kirby Smith sent his main force north to repel the Union troops in Arkansas. Taylor could pose no threat to the fortified Union army at Grand Ecore but, nevertheless, he put his men on the road from Mansfield to demonstrate and divert the enemy’s attention. Taylor hoped to pin down the Union army until the depth of the Red River fell and left them isolated.
Louisiana. USS Rachel Seaman, Acting Master Charles Potter, seized the blockade-running British schooner Maria Alfred near the Mermentau River with assorted cargo.
Louisiana. USS Nyanza, Acting Lieutenant Washburn, captured the schooner Mandoline in Atchafalaya Bay with a cargo of cotton.
North Carolina. Expedition to Swift Creek Village began.
Tennessee. Skirmish at Mink Springs, six miles from Cleveland. Confederate cavalry surprised and captured a Union outpost on the Cleveland and Ducktown Road.
Tennessee. The Union IX Corps was ordered to return from Tennessee to serve in Virginia. The IX Corps was sent first to Annapolis, Maryland, where it was reorganised into four divisions under Brigadier-General Thomas Greeley Stevenson (commanding from 19 April 1864), Brigadier-General Robert Brown Potter (from 1 May 1864), Brigadier-General Orlando Bolivar Willcox (from 19 April 1864), and Brigadier-General Edward Ferrero. As both Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside and his Chief of Staff Major-General John Grubb Parke were senior in the US Volunteers to Major-General George Gordon Meade, commanding the Army of the Potomac, a clumsy compromise was reached whereby IX Corps would be subordinated to the Department of the Potomac and report directly for orders to the General-in-Chief, Lieutenant-General Ulysses Simpson Grant, rather than being subordinated to the Army of the Potomac.
Texas. Expedition to Matagorda Bay ended.
Texas. Incident at Elm Creek.
Texas. The blockade runner San Juanita which had been captured by USS Virginia off San Luis Pass on 11 April, ran aground. The Union prize crew under Acting Ensign N A Blume was stranded and taken prisoner by the Confederates.
Virginia. Reconnaissance from Portsmouth to the Blackwater River by the 2nd US Colored Cavalry began.
Virginia. Union expeditions from Norfolk to Isle of Wight County began. The Union fleet included the transports, Pentz, Thomas, Tracy, Tucker, and Woodis, and the gunboats USS Brewster, USS Foster, USS Jesup, USS Nansemond, and USS Reno, along with the flagship USS Minnesota.
Virginia. A Union expedition advanced up the Nansemond River to capture Confederate troops in the area and to destroy the torpedo boat Squib. The naval force deployed by Rear Admiral Samuel Phillips Lee included USS Stepping Stones, USS Commodore Morris, USS Commodore Perry, USS Commodore Barney, USS Shokokon, and two launches from USS Minnesota. Some prisoners were taken and information was obtained that Squib had departed Smithfield for Richmond on 10 April 1864. Acting Lieutenant Charles B Wilder, commanding USS Minnesota‘s two launches, was killed by snipers near Smithfield.
Virginia. Skirmish near Nokesville, against Confederate guerrillas.
Virginia. Skirmish at Smithfield.
Virginia. Skirmish at Cherry Grove Landing.
