November 3 1863 Tuesday
Battle of Colliersville, TN (CWSAC Limited Battle Union Victory)
Grand Coteau, LA
Bristoe Campaign
Chattanooga Campaign
Averell’s Lewisburg Raid
Rio Grande Expedition
Second Bayou Teche Campaign
Arkansas. Confederate Brigadier-General Joseph Orville Shelby’s raiders reached Washington, forty miles southwest of Arkadelphia, and ended their long campaign in Missouri.
Louisiana. USS Kenwood, Acting Master Swaney, captured the steamer Black Flank off Port Hudson with a cargo of cotton.
Grand Coteau, Louisiana, also known as Bayou Bourbeau, Boggy Creek, Buzzard’s Prairie, and Carrion Creek Bayou. At Grand Coteau, ten miles short of Opelousas, the Union Bayou Teche expedition was attacked by 6,000 Confederate troops sent by Major-General Richard Taylor under Brigadier-General Thomas Green. Green was reinforced by three regiments led by Colonel Oran M Roberts. The 99th Illinois Infantry was involved in several skirmishes near Grand Coteau, at Bayou Bourbeau, Boggy Creek, Buzzard’s Prairie, and Carrion Creek Bayou. A detachment of 625 men commanded by Captain A C Mathews fought the main battle. The Union forces in the area were commanded overall by Brigadier-General Stephen Gano Burbridge. The Union troops were driven back through Vermillionville to New Iberia and then they moved on to New Orleans on 9 November 1863. The Union force reported 42 casualties, for the loss of 26 Confederates.
Mississippi. Confederate cavalry under Brigadier-General James Ronald Chalmers attacked Union troops at Quinn and Jackson’s Mill by the Coldwater River on the Memphis & Charleston Railroad. The Union reported 95 Confederate casualties.
South Carolina. The Confederates made elaborate preparations to meet any Union attempt to breach the obstructions between Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie while the bombardment of Fort Sumter continued. The three Confederate rams, CSS Charleston, CSS Chicora, and CSS Palmetto State, and a side-wheel steamer anchored in line of battle each with its torpedo loaded and projecting forward of the bows.
Tennessee. Union troops attacked the camp of Confederate Colonel Albert Cooper at Lawrenceburg.
Tennessee. Responding to a suggestion made by President Jefferson Finis Davis during his visit a few days earlier, General Braxton Bragg announced in a council of war that he was sending a force into East Tennessee. Lieutenant-General James Longstreet would take his two divisions from Chattanooga to deal with the threat arising from the advance of Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside’s Union Army of the Ohio, which was currently occupying Knoxville. Davis had suggested Longstreet’s force for this assignment because he intended Longstreet’s divisions to return to the Army of Northern Virginia at the end of the campaign, and Knoxville was on the shortest route back to Virginia. Bragg compensated for the departure of Longstreet’s men by ordering the divisions of Major-General Carter Littlepage Stevenson and Benjamin Franklin Cheatham to return to his army from East Tennessee. However, he dispatched much of the cavalry force of the Army of Tennessee to accompany Longstreet. Despite the arrival of rapidly growing enemy forces around Chattanooga, Bragg had decreased his own overall numbers at Chattanooga by about 4,000 men.
Tennessee. Confederate operations along the Memphis & Charleston Railroad began.
Colliersville, Tennessee, also known as Collierville. Confederate cavalry had launched a raid to break up the Memphis & Charleston Railroad behind Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman’s XV Corps, which was marching to the relief of Chattanooga. When Brigadier-General James Ronald Chalmers, leading a cavalry division from Mississippi, learned that only one or two Union regiments were defending Colliersville, he decided to attack.
Union Colonel Edward Hatch possessed more men in his 3rd Cavalry Brigade than Chalmers supposed, with detachments stationed at Colliersville and also at Germantown, five miles to the west. Scouts warned Hatch of Chalmers’ approach from the south, so he ordered Collierville’s defenders to be prepared and rode from Germantown with reinforcements. Chalmers, as he had done only three weeks earlier, attacked from the south with Colonel McCulloch’s and Colonel Slemon’s brigades. The Union garrison was defended by eight companies of the 7th Illinois Cavalry and two howitzers. Hatch quickly arrived with the 6th Illinois Cavalry and 2nd Iowa Cavalry to reinforce them. The Confederates launched their first attack with part of Slemon’s brigade, believing faulty intelligence that it was lightly defended. The Union 2nd Iowa Cavalry opened fire with their repeating Colt revolver rifles and repulsed the attack. Surprised by the unexpected appearance of the enemy on his flanks, Chalmers concluded that he was outnumbered, called off the battle, and withdrew back towards Mississippi. The Memphis & Charleston Railroad remained open to Tuscumbia, Alabama, for Union troop movements. The Confederates reported the loss of 6 men killed, 63 wounded, and 26 prisoners. The Union reported the loss of approximately 60 casualties. (CWSAC Limited Battle Union Victory)
Texas. Union forces of Brigadier-General Napoleon Jackson Tecumseh Dana continued to land at Brazos Island and the advance guard moved onto the Texan mainland towards Brazos Santiago. Naval forces under Commander James Hooker Strong, including USS Monongahela, USS Owasco, and USS Virginia, continued to support the landing.
Virginia. A Confederate reconnaissance to Catlett’s Station by Major John Singleton Mosby resulted in the capture of several Union soldiers from the command of Union Brigadier-General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick.
West Virginia. Union expedition to Charleston and Lewisburg began. Brigadier-General Alfred Napoleon Alexander Duffié’s column left Charleston to strengthen Brigadier-General William Woods Averell’s raid to Lewisburg.
