Florida. USS Two Sisters, Acting Master Charles H Rockwell, seized the blockade-running schooner Maria Alberta near Bayport.

Ringgold Gap, Georgia, also known as Taylor’s Ridge. Confederate Major-General Patrick Ronayne Cleburne’s division had withdrawn across Chickamauga Creek as the rearguard of the retreat from Chattanooga. Allowing the division to rest, Cleburne scouted ahead during the night. By daybreak, his division had reached Ringgold and moved into positions guarding the narrow gorge at Ringgold Gap, where the Western & Atlantic Railroad passed through Taylor’s Ridge. Cleburne posted his two guns and awaited the arrival of the Union army while the main body of the Confederate army continued towards Dalton, relying on Cleburne to earn time and a chance for the wagon train and artillery to escape destruction.
Following the victory at Missionary Ridge, the Union army began a more earnest pursuit. Union Major-General Joseph Hooker sent his forces forward to seize Ringgold Gap. Hooker’s force was taken by surprise by Cleburne’s rearguard, but he tried to use his superior numbers to regain the initiative. Hooker first attempted to outflank the Confederates on the right, but Cleburne shifted a force to oppose it. Hooker then feinted at the centre, and then tried an uphill attack to the left of the gap. The advance stalled and Hooker sent for artillery to drive out the defenders from their rocky positions. Cleburne’s 4,100 men held out against Hooker’s 12,000 for five hours, allowing Hooker to gain little ground. Cleburne’s men stayed until about noon and then retreated unmolested, having successfully allowed the wagons and artillery of the army to pass through the gap unharmed.
Union Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant called off the remaining pursuit because his army was still low on rations, and he decided to stay close to his supply line before making his next advance. Furthermore, Washington was clamouring for the relief of Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside in Knoxville and Grant was told that the Union troops there had rations to last only until 3rd December. Union casualties in the pursuit to Ringgold Gap were reported as 432 or 442 (including a hundred prisoners) and Confederate as 221. (CWSAC Major Battle – Confederate Victory)
Kentucky. Skirmish at Lafayette. Confederate raiders stole a herd of Union horses and crossed the Cumberland River to safety aboard the steam-boat Duke.
Kentucky. Confederate raiders captured the town of Monticello with its Union garrison of 153 men.
Mississippi. Incident at Ripley.
Missouri. Reconnaissance to Houston ended.
Ohio. Confederate Brigadier-General John Hunt Morgan escaped from the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus with six of his captains. They tunnelled their way out of their cell, scaled the prison wall, and headed for the Confederate lines.
Tennessee. Incidents at Sparta, La Vergne, Cleveland and Gillespie’s.
Tennessee. Union Major-General Gordon Granger was ordered to take the 2nd Division and 3rd Division of IV Corps (Cumberland) from Chattanooga to assist in the relief of Knoxville.
Tennessee. Two Confederate cavalry brigades (one from the Shenandoah Valley commanded by Brigadier-General William Edmondson Jones, and one from the Department of Southwestern Virginia under Colonel Henry L Giltner) joined Lieutenant-General James Longstreet’s expedition in Eastern Tennessee. They were assigned to the Cavalry Corps of Major-General Joseph Wheeler and supplemented the two infantry brigades under Brigadier-General Bushrod Rust Johnson which had already arrived from Chattanooga to strengthen Longstreet’s force.

Texas. Union Brigadier-General Thomas Edward Greenfield Ransom continued his march of 22 miles from Corpus Christi to Pass Cavallo at the entrance to Matagorda Bay. When Major-General Cadwallader Colden General Washburn arrived, he ordered Ransom’s brigade up the centre of the island while Colonel Henry D Washburn’s brigade moved on a parallel route along the coast. Washburn’s brigade reached Fort Esperanza first. The Union advanced guard encountered pickets from the 8th Texas Infantry, who retreated within the fortification after a brief skirmish. Ransom awaited support from USS Monongahela to attack the small three-gun fort defending Pass Cavallo.

Mine Run, Virginia, also known as Payne’s Farm, or New Hope Church. Union Major-General George Gordon Meade had attempted to steal a march through the Wilderness and to strike the right flank of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia south of the Rapidan River. After hearing from his cavalry scouts that the Union army was crossing the Rapidan at Germanna Ford and Ely’s Ford, Confederate General Robert Edward Lee sent Major-General Jubal Anderson Early, in temporary command of II Corps, eastwards along the Orange Turnpike towards Locust Grove to either oppose or deflect the Union advance. Lee sent for Lieutenant-General Ambrose Powell Hill to bring his corps from beyond Clark’s Mountain and to make the thirty-mile march to join Early. Lee moved his own headquarters from Orange to Verdiersville, twelve miles nearer tp the anticipated action.
Union Major-General William French’s III Corps started out at dawn but took a wrong turn after leaving the vicinity of Jacob’s Ford. It was not until the afternoon that he found his properly intended route, but he soon encountered Confederate skirmishers near Payne’s Farm. He deployed his leading division and found himself unexpectedly facing a strong enemy force from Early’s II Corps. Brigadier-General Joseph Bradford Carr’s Union division attacked twice but without success. Major-General Edward Johnson’s Confederate division counter-attacked but it was scattered by heavy fire and broken terrain. Each side lost about 500 men in the encounter and then broke off the fighting. After dark, Lee withdrew to a prepared line of field fortifications west of Mine Run, which flowed northwards into the Rapidan.
