Siege of Vicksburg
Port Hudson Campaign

Brazil. CSS Alabama, Captain Raphael Semmes, captured and burned the ship Gildersleeve and also bonded the Justina off Bahia.

USA. Union Major-General Henry Wager Halleck discontinued all exchanges of prisoners of war, except in special circumstances. It was held that the Confederates were gaining more benefit from the exchange of prisoners than the Union, and that there was injustice in the Confederate attitude towards freed slaves who had been captured.

Louisiana. The Union expeditionary force of Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks converged to attempt the encirclement of the Confederate defences at Port Hudson. Three divisions had crossed the Mississippi after descending the Red River from Alexandria, while two more divisions arrived from the south after marching overland from New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Louisiana. Confederate Major-General Franklin Gardner had been following orders from Lieutenant-General John Clifford Pemberton to hold the stronghold of Port Hudson at all costs. A courier arrived with orders from General Joseph Eggleston Johnston for Gardner to evacuate Port Hudson and to extract as much military equipment as possible. By the time the courier arrived with the countermanding order, Port Hudson was already cut off and it was too late for Gardner to comply with the instructions to attempt a break-out.

Louisiana. Two Confederate steamers, Red Chief and Starlight, were captured by Union forces on the Mississippi River.

Mississippi. Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston sent a message to Lieutenant-General John Clifford Pemberton that a division was being sent from Tennessee to strengthen the force being gathered for the relief of Vicksburg.

Mississippi. At 6 pm, a short truce was accepted by Union Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant truce to collect and bury the putrefying dead of the earlier assaults at Vicksburg

Mississippi. The defeat of his assaults on the 19 May and 22 May persuaded Union Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant to commence a conventional siege and to starve out the defenders of Vicksburg. Union troops began to construct elaborate entrenchments and saps, or “ditches” around the city and crept closer and closer to the Confederate fortifications. With their backs against the Mississippi and with Union gunboats firing from the river, Confederate soldiers and citizens alike were trapped and hoped for the improbable prospects of relief from outside.
Grant’s army began to fill in the 12-mile ring around Vicksburg, but it became clear that even the 50,000 Union soldiers available would not suffice to achieve a complete encirclement of the Confederate defences. Grant sought help from the General-in-Chief, Major-General Henry Wager Halleck, who quickly began to transfer Union troops to meet Grant’s needs. Two divisions were either on their way or arriving from Memphis and four more were identified in Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky, which from mid-June onwards, would raise his strength to 71,000 men. That was now a sufficient force both to enclose Vicksburg and to hold off any relief attack.
Inside the siege, Confederate Lieutenant-General John Clifford Pemberton’s outlook on escape was pessimistic. He lacked transportation and his army was demoralised. He relied on relief from outside, even though there were still roads leading south out of Vicksburg that were unguarded by Union troops.

Tennessee. US President Abraham Lincoln overruled the judgment of Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside and sentenced former Congressman Clement Laird Vallandigham to banishment for expressing extreme anti-war and pro-Confederate sentiments. He was turned over to Confederate authorities near Tullahoma. Vallandigham was advised that he could not remain in the Confederacy if he asserted that he was a loyal citizen of the Union, so he made his way to Wilmington, North Carolina, whence he boarded a ship for the West Indies.

Tennessee. Union Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside assumed field command of the Army of the Ohio. This comprised IX Corps (Ohio) under Brigadier-General Orlando Bolivar Willcox as its main field force. Further components were preparing to move forward from the Upper Cumberland River towards Knoxville, Tennessee, and these would be designated later as XXIII Corps (Ohio).
