Marmaduke’s Missouri Raid

The Mud March

USA: After an enquiry lasting 45 days, Union Major-General USV and Colonel USA Fitz John Porter was officially cashiered from the US Army by order of President Abraham Lincoln. His stated offence was failure to follow the orders of Major-General John Pope during the Second Battle of Bull Run. The penalty imposed on Porter was ultimately revoked in 1879 after a military review found in his favour. Porter was reinstated as a Colonel in the Regular Army in 1886, albeit without an award of back pay. The acrimony arising from that campaign and the partiality of officers’ loyalties had divided the high command of Army of the Potomac since the removal of Major-General George Brinton McClellan from command. Factions and competing rivalries undermined both Pope and McClellan and continued throughout the command of Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside. Several other officers were either sidelined to minor sectors or found that their commissions were not confirmed or renewed in early 1863.

Arkansas. Incident at Pope County.

Louisiana. Incident at Milliken’s Bend.

Missouri. Skirmish near Columbia.

North Carolina. Expedition to New Bern ended. Reconnaissance to Onslow, Trenton and Young’s Cross Roads and Pollocksville ended.

North Carolina. USS Daylight, Acting Master Joshua D Warren, forced an unnamed blockade-running schooner aground off New Topsail Inlet and destroyed her.

South Carolina. USS Ottawa, Lieutenant-Commander William D Whiting, captured the schooner Etiwan off Charleston with a cargo of cotton.

South Carolina. USS Chocura, Lieutenant-Commander William T Truxtun, seized the blockade-running British schooner Pride east of Cape Romain, with a cargo of salt.

Tennessee. Expedition to Auburn began.

Tennessee. Union reconnaissance from Murfreesboro toAburn,  Liberty, and Cainsville began.

Tennessee. Skirmish on the Shelbyville Pike.

Tennessee. A Union forage train travelling near Murfreesboro was surprised by a group of Confederate raiders. After a brief skirmish, the Confederates captured the entire train.

Tennessee. Confederate President Jefferson Finis Davis ordered Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston to travel to Tennessee to discuss with Confederate General Braxton Bragg his reasons for retreating from Murfreesboro after the battle of Stones River.

Sabine Pass, Texas. The Confederate cotton-clad steamers CSS Josiah Bell and CSS Uncle Ben under Major Oscar M Watkins attacked the blockading fleet at Sabine Pass, eighty miles east of Galveston. The Union blockade was composed of the sailing ship USS Morning Star and the schooner USS Velocity. When they were within 1,000 yards of the enemy, the sharpshooters on CSS Josiah Bell opened fire and swept the decks of USS Morning Light, Acting Master John Dillingham, and forced its surrender. In the meantime, the CSS Uncle Ben bore down on the schooner USS Velocity, Acting Master Nathan W Hammond, and overran it. The Union vessels were unable to manoeuvre and gave up 11 (or 13 guns) and 109 prisoners. Two days later the Confederates burned USS Morning Light because she could not be brought over the bar at Sabine Pass. This success lifted temporarily the Union blockade of Texas.

Virginia. The Union barges J C Davis and Liberty broke loose from their anchorage at Cornfield Harbour, Maryland, and drifted into Coan River where they were boarded and captured by the Confederates. Union Acting Master Benjamin C Dean, USS Dan Smith, ordered a cutter to enter the Coan River to rescue the crews and recapture or destroy the boats. This was accomplished successfully by Acting Ensign Francis L Harris.

Virginia. Union Major-General Ambrose Everett Burnside’s Army of the Potomac resumed its march through heavy rain to cross the Rappahannock at Banks’ Ford above Fredericksburg. The advance ground to a standstill and the essential pontoon-train could not make any progress along the bottomless muddy roads. The army bivouacked in the rain without having begun to cross the river and was taunted by Confederate pickets observing the movement from across the river. The element of surprise and speed were entirely lost and the soldiers became demoralised by the difficult conditions.
