Marmaduke’s Missouri Raid
Arkansas River Expedition
White River Expedition
Arkansas. Union expedition to South Bend ended. Union
Arkansas. Reconnaissance to St Charles ended.
Arkansas. A Union expedition under Lieutenant-Commander John G Walker USN and Brigadier-General Willis Arnold Gorman arrived at St Charles on the White River. The aim was to exploit the advantage gained by the capture of Fort Hindman. The flotilla included the gunboats USS Baron De Kalb and USS Cincinnati, with two Army transports in tow. The Confederates were found to have abandoned their positions and withdrew upriver aboard the vessel Blue Wing. While USS Cincinnati remained at St Charles, USS Baron De Kalb proceeded up the White River in pursuit of the Confederate transport.
Bayou Teche, Louisiana. Union troops from XIX Corps under Brigadier-General Godfrey Weitzel crossed Berwick Bay and began to ascend Bayou Teche. They disembarked and forced the Confederates to withdraw. They began to remove obstacles set in the river by the Confederates of Major-General Richard Taylor to allow the supporting warships to pass.
The Union gunboats USS Kinsman, USS Estrella, USS Calhoun, and USS Diana under Lieutenant-Commander Thomas McKean Buchanan USN attacked Confederate positions at Bayou Teche below Franklin. USS Kinsman, Acting Lieutenant George Wiggin, had its rudder damaged by an underwater torpedo. Commander Buchanan was killed by fire from the shore. The Confederate gunboat CSS Cotton, Lieutenant Edward W Fuller, counter-attacked but was forced to withdraw, and was subsequently set on fire and destroyed to escape capture. The ship was sunk across the bayou to block further passage upstream. The scale and ingenuity of the Confederate resistance persuaded Union Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks to undertake further operations in the swampy bayou region to ensure security for his bases at New Orleans before he could advance against Vicksburg and Port Hudson. The Union force lost 32 killed and wounded in addition to the naval commander. Confederate losses unknown.

Missouri. Confederate Brigadier-General John Sappington Marmaduke abandoned his invasion of Missouri and began a difficult return march to Arkansas through bad weather and storms.
North Carolina. USS Columbia, Lieutenant Joseph P Couthouy, remained aground on the coast. High winds and heavy seas prevented all attempts to get her off.
North Carolina. The threat of further Union raids into the interior of North Carolina prompted the transfer of the experienced Major-General Daniel Harvey Hill with reinforcements from the Army of Northern Virginia to defend North Carolina.
Tennessee. Incident at Lafayette.
Tennessee. Confederate Major-General Joseph Wheeler ended his raid in northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee.
Tennessee. Confederate forces in the western theatre were reorganised and Lieutenant-General Edmund Kirby Smith was ordered to take command of the Trans-Mississippi Department. Smith had refused to serve under General Braxton Bragg and his transfer provided a solution to their rivalry. Smith agreed to spend a month working on the reorganisation of the army before departing from Tennessee in February 1863.
Major-General John Porter McCown’s division had already been transferred permanently to the Army of the Tennessee at Murfreesboro and Major-General Carter Littlepage Stevenson’s division of 10,000 men had departed in December 1862 to join Lieutenant-General John Clifford Pemberton’s Army of Mississippi at Vicksburg. This left Smith’s future successor, Brigadier-General Henry Heth, with a minimal field force of about 6,000 men to operate in the Department of East Tennessee. Chattanooga was removed from Heth’s area of authority in the Department of East Tennessee and now came under Bragg’s Army of Tennessee.
