East Tennessee Campaign

Indian Ocean. Captain Raphael Semmes of CSS Alabama noted the effect of Confederate commerce raiding on US shipping in the Far East. He believed that enemy trade with East India and China was reduced as their ships could not obtain cargoes for fear of loss to his cruiser.

Mississippi. Incident at Fayette.

Tennessee. Reconnaissance to Dandridge began. Incident at Cleveland.

Virginia. Brigadier-General Michael Corcoran was commanding a division of XXII Corps in the Washington defences. While riding alone in Fairfax he was thrown from a runaway horse and suffered a fractured skull. He died shortly afterwards at the W P Gunnell House. He was an early appointment to the Union high command and only eight active Brigadier-Generals in the US Volunteers were senior to him in rank.

Virginia. Incidents at Amissville and Gaines Cross Roads.
