Bayou Meto, AR

Chickamauga Campaign

Burnside’s East Tennessee Campaign

Gillmore’s Operations in Charleston Harbour – Siege of Fort Wagner

Arizona Territory. Skirmish at Fort Bowie as Indians on horseback on the road from Tucson seized the entire stock of Union horses.

Bayou Meto, Arkansas, also known as Reed’s Bridge. Union cavalry commanded by Brigadier-General John Wynn Davidson attacked an entrenched Confederate position held by the cavalry division of Brigadier-General John Sappington Marmaduke northeast of the Bayou Meto. The Union attack successfully dislodged the Confederate forces from their initial positions. The Confederates retreated across the Bayou Meto, burned Reed’s Bridge, and repulsed Union attempts to cross the stream. The battle continued as an artillery duel until nightfall, at which point the Union forces retreated.

The fight at Bayou Meto was the last successful Confederate attempt to oppose the Union advance on Little Rock. Union Major-General Frederick Steele decided to divert his advance on Little Rock to approach from the south-east. After the battle and as the culmination of previous disagreements, Marmaduke asked to be removed from Brigadier-General Lucius Marshall Walker’s command under threat of resignation. Walker subsequently challenged Marmaduke to a duel on 6 September 1863, in which Walker was mortally wounded. Confederate casualties were reported as 7 killed and 38 wounded; Union losses are not known.

Florida. USS Sunflower, Acting Master Van Sice, captured the schooner General Worth in the Straits of Florida.

Florida. USS Preble, Acting Master William F Shankland, was destroyed by an accidental fire at Pensacola.

West Virginia. Skirmish at Ball’s Mill,

West Virginia. Union Brigadier-General William Woods Averell ran short of ammunition and ended his engagement with Colonel George S Patton’s brigade on the road to White Sulphur Springs. He turned back towards Huntersville and ended his raid. Confederate Brigadier-General John Daniel Imboden’s brigade was unable to intercept the retreat.
