Kansas. Skirmish near Panola with Colonel William Clarke Quantrill’s raiders.
Lawrence Massacre, Kansas, also known as Lawrence or Quantrill’s Raid. During the troubles in Kansas in 1856 and for a long time afterwards, Lawrence was a primary target for pro-slavery protests and violence. It had the thoroughly justified reputation of being the most ardent anti-slavery stronghold in the state and more importantly, a staging area for pro-Union and Jayhawker incursions into Missouri.
Confederate Colonel William Clarke Quantrill led a force of about 450 partisan raiders and guerrillas in an attack on the city. He had brought his own band of 300 guerrillas and was joined on the way by 104 army recruits under Colonel John D Holt and numerous other small parties of volunteers. Quantrill targeted Lawrence due to the town’s long support of abolition and its reputation as a haven for “Redlegs” and Jayhawkers, free-state militia and vigilante groups suspected of attacking and destroying farms and plantations in Missouri’s pro-slavery western counties. Quantrill intended the raid to be in retaliation for Union Senator (and Brigadier-General) James Henry Lane’s raid on Osceola in September 1861.
Quantrill’s attack was carefully and ruthlessly planned. No quarter was expected, and none was to be given. Quantrill had been able to gain the confidence of many of the leaders of independent Bushwhacker groups and had chosen the day and time of the attack well in advance. The different groups of Missouri riders approached Lawrence from the east in several independent columns and converged with well-timed precision in the final miles before Lawrence during the pre-dawn hours of the chosen day. Many of the men had been riding for over 24 hours to make the rendezvous and lashed themselves to their saddles to keep riding if they fell asleep. They were almost all armed with multiple, long-barrelled, cap-and-ball revolvers, shoved crossways into their shirt-fronts so they would not have to reload in the heat of a fight, adopting the pistoleer tactics which were used after the war by western gunfighters.
Arriving at the summit of Mount Oread with between three and four hundred riders, Quantrill descended on Lawrence in a fury. The first victim was Rev S S Snyder, a lieutenant of the 2nd Kansas Colored Infantry, who was shot while milking his cow. Seventeen recruits of the 14th US Cavalry were killed in their beds at a deserted camp outside the town. For four hours the raiders pillaged the town and murdered most of its male population, including all but one man on Quantrill’s personal list of targets. The main target of the raid, Jayhawker Senator James Henry Lane, managed to escape death by racing through a cornfield in his nightshirt. Holt’s less hardened recruits managed to save a few male fugitives from the more ruthless guerrillas. Raiders indulged in fancy riding, arson, drunkenness, and murder. By 9 am, the raiders were on their way out of town, splitting up into small bands to evade Union pursuit. About 200 buildings were set on fire, nearly a quarter of Lawrence, including all but two business premises. The raiders also looted most of the banks and stores. Property loss was estimated at $2,000,000.
The Lawrence Massacre was one of the most outrageous events in the history of Kansas. Confederate casualties amounted to one man who was left behind drunk and was killed at the hands of the citizens. Union casualties numbered at least 150 and perhaps as many as 164, or even 200 men and boys, of whom fewer than 20 were soldiers. (CWSAC Formative Battle – Confederate Victory)
Mississippi. Skirmish at Coldwater.
North Carolina. The Union brig USS Bainbridge foundered at sea while proceeding to her station with the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. The ship capsized off Cape Hatteras with the loss of all but one of her crew.
South Carolina. Following four days of intensive bombardment of Fort Wagner, Fort Sumter, and Fort Gregg from afloat and ashore, naval forces under Rear Admiral John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren moved late at night to press an attack on the heavily damaged Fort Sumter from a much closer range. USS Passaic was steaming ahead of the other ironclads when it grounded near the fort shortly after midnight. It took so much time to extricate the USS Passaic that the attack was abandoned as daylight was fast approaching. After the action, Dahlgren reported the difficulties of the naval offensive caused by the multitude of duties his ships had to perform. He noted that one ironclad had to be stationed at Savannah and that another was repairing at Port Royal. The remaining five had to work closely in support of army operations ashore, as siege works could only be advanced while the ironclads suppressed the Confederates in Fort Wagner.
Fort Wagner, South Carolina. Confederate Brigadier General Johnson Hagood, commanding Fort Wagner, reported that the destructive fire from the fleet, enfilading the land face, compelled the gunners to cease firing. When the vessels withdrew, Union sharpshooters resumed the relentless work of harassment. Union Major-General Quincy Adams Gillmore’s forces had dug trenches close enough to the Confederate works for the infantry to enter the action. Colonel George B Dandy led the 100th New York Infantry in a rush toward Fort Wagner’s rifle pits. They established a temporary picket line, but their success was short-lived. Hagood ordered a counterattack which drove off Dandy’s men. Confederate engineers began working to strengthen the rifle pits, hoping to lure the Union army into mounting another costly assault.
Tennessee. Skirmish at Shellmound.
Second Chattanooga, Tennessee, also known as Chattanooga. Union Major-General William Starke Rosecrans and his army endured difficult road conditions before they reached the Tennessee River Valley near Chattanooga. They encamped while engineers prepared a crossing of the river. Two corps of the Army of the Cumberland were marching southwest of Chattanooga to cross Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain, while Major-General Thomas Leonidas Crittenden’s men demonstrated further upstream and closer to the town.
Union Colonel John Thomas Wilder’s brigade from Major-General Joseph Jones Reynolds’ 4th Division, XIV Army Corps, marched to a location northeast of Chattanooga and conducted an ingenious diversion. His men pounded on tubs and sawed boards, sending pieces of wood downstream, to make the Confederates think that rafts were being constructed for a crossing north of the city. They made sure that Confederate Lieutenant-General Daniel Harvey Hill’s Corps could see the threat and raise General Braxton Bragg’s expectations of a Union attack on the town from that direction.
Similarly, the 18th Indiana Artillery Battery (Capt Eli Lilly) was placed on Stringer’s Ridge above Chattanooga and began shelling the city after midday, sinking one steamer and damaging a second docked at the river landing. Confederate President Jefferson Finis Davis had declared a day of prayer and fasting and many citizens and officers and soldiers alike were in church when the shells rained upon them, causing considerable consternation.
The deceptions worked perfectly, and Bragg was persuaded that the Union crossing would take place above the city and would be developed in combination with the Army of the Ohio, which was known to be advancing from Knoxville. Bragg withdrew his advanced brigade from the north bank of the crossing at Bridgeport, fifty miles downstream. Diversions were repeated periodically over the next two weeks, keeping Bragg’s attention to the northeast while the bulk of Major-General William Starke Rosecrans’ army actually moved towards the Tennessee River west and south of Chattanooga. Virginia. Incident at Cunningham’s Ford.
West Virginia. Skirmish near Glenville with Confederate guerrillas.
