Caribbean Sea. CSS Florida, Lieutenant Samuel W Averett, captured at sea and bonded the ship Kate Dyer bound for Antwerp, Belgium.
USA. US President Abraham Lincoln endorsed the admission of the state of West Virginia to the Union. Arthur I Boreman would become the first Governor of West Virginia.
Florida. A landing party from USS Port Royal, under Lieutenant-Commander George U Morris, captured cotton awaiting transportation and three prisoners at Apalachicola.
Florida. USS Octorara, Commander Napoleon Collins, captured the British blockade runner W Y Leitch east of Florida with a cargo of salt.
Kentucky. Incident at Celina.
Louisiana. Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks’ expedition along Bayou Teche reached the former temporary state capital of Opelousas and began a few days of rest. Banks ended the campaign and consolidated his gains by sending huge quantities of cotton, food, horses, and other supplies with an estimated value of $5,000,000 towards New Orleans. Banks’ troops also occupied Washington.
Louisiana. Major-General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks enlisted two new regiments of 500 black soldiers each to replace his casualties. The 1st Louisiana Native Guards was made up of free men and the 3rd Louisiana Native Guards comprised former slaves. They joined the Corps d’Afrique and awaited an opportunity to prove their worth.
Louisiana. USS Estrella, Lieutenant-Commander Cooke, USS Clifton, USS Arina, and USS Calhoun made an expedition to Fort Burton at Butte à la Rose. They engaged the fort and received its surrender.
Louisiana. Confederate Major-General Richard Taylor ended his retreat from the Bayou Teche region and occupied Gordon’s Landing on the Red River, thirty miles below Alexandria. He also garrisoned Fort De Russy, a triple-casemated battery that commanded the river from the riverside bluffs.
Mississippi. USS General Sterling Price, Commander Selim E Woodworth, and USS Tuscumbia, Lieutenant-Commander James W Shirk, scouted down the Mississippi River from New Carthage to the Confederate stronghold at Grand Gulf in preparation for the Union assault. Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter reported that Grand Gulf was being fortified vigorously, with three guns already mounted on a bluff 100 feet high, aiming upriver.
Mississippi. The wrecked hulk of the USS Indianola, captured and sunk by the Confederates below Vicksburg, was found to be salvageable. Union naval officers inspected the wreck and found the hull and machinery in good condition but the wooden deck was burnt. The casemate for the 11-inch guns was shattered, with iron plates strewn across the deck. The 11-inch gun carriages were also wrecked. The 9-inch gun carriages had been burned by the Confederates. One 11-inch and one 9-inch gun had been removed. An attempt to raise the USS Indianola was launched.
Mississippi. Union Colonel Benjamin Henry Grierson detached a force of cavalry raiders from 2nd Iowa Cavalry under Colonel Edward Hatch to circle eastwards from Houston, threatening the Mobile & Ohio Railroad. They were then to move north as a decoy, drawing Confederate pursuit after them. They would follow the route of the “quinine brigade” detached the day before to give an impression that the raiders were all heading north. Hatch managed to draw a good proportion of the Mississippi Home Guard in pursuit in his five-day ride back to La Grange, Tennessee. Grierson’s main body continued southwards past Starkville. Grierson detached 35 men under Captain Henry Forbes (Co B 7th Illinois Cavalry) at Starkville to operate to the east of the main column. Forbes raided the Mobile & Ohio Railroad before rejoining Grierson at the Pearl River five days later.
Mississippi. Confederate Lieutenant-General John Clifford Pemberton appealed for reinforcements to strengthen his defence of Vicksburg. He specifically requested the return of 6,000 cavalrymen who had been sent to Middle Tennessee in January under Major-General Earl Van Dorn but had since been absorbed into the Army of Tennessee. He protested that he had no cavalry to patrol the banks of the Mississippi River from Grand Gulf to Yazoo City while the Union army was preparing to cross somewhere along that line. General Joseph Eggleston Johnston could not accede to the request because all available cavalry was already committed to causing mayhem in the Union rear in Tennessee. Brigadier-General Nathan Bedford Forrest was pursuing raiders in Alabama and the remainder of the cavalry was active in Tennessee and Kentucky under Major-General Joseph Wheeler, Major-General Earl Van Dorn, and Brigadier-General John Hunt Morgan.
Mississippi. Union Major-General Frederick Steele sent the 3rd Missouri Infantry and 31st Missouri Infantry Regiments to scout the Williams Bayou near Greenville.
Missouri. Skirmish at Bloomfield.
Missouri. Reconnaissance to Neosho ended.
Patterson, Missouri. Confederate Brigadier-General John Sappington Marmaduke invaded Missouri with 5,000 men and 10 pieces of artillery from Arkansas. His force was organised into four brigades marching in two columns. One column, commanded by Colonel Joseph Orville Shelby entered the state from the west while the second, commanded by Colonel George W Carter entered farther to the east. The two columns met at Patterson and attacked the town. The local Union forces were alerted by the sound of artillery fire and escaped north in the direction of Pilot Knob, losing 12 men killed, 7 wounded and 41 captured or missing.
North Carolina Expedition to Kinston and New Bern ended.
North Carolina. Skirmish at Sandy Ridge involving Confederate Major-General Daniel Harvey Hill.
North Carolina. Confederate Major-General Daniel Harvey Hill’s division returned to Goldsboro after abandoning the siege of Washington.
South Carolina. USS Lodona, Commander Edmund R Colhoun, seized the British schooner Minnie attempting to run the blockade at Bull’s Bay with a cargo of salt.
Tennessee. Expeditions from Murfreesboro to McMinnville began.
Utah Territory. Expedition to Camp Douglass and Spanish Fork ended.
Virginia. Union reconnaissance from Winchester towards Wardensville and Strasburg began.
Virginia. Incident at Somerton Road.
Virginia. A joint Union Army and Navy attack had succeeded in capturing a strong Confederate position at Hill’s Point on the west side of the Nansemond River, taking 5 howitzers and some 160 prisoners, as well as denying the use of an effective position from which to shell the flotilla guarding the Union Army positions around Suffolk. Later that night, Confederates evacuated their battery at Reed’s Ferry, allowing the Union ships clear passage of the western branch of the Nansemond.
Virginia. Confederate Brigadier-General William Edmondson Jones left Harrisonburg with his cavalry brigade. His raid was first proposed by John Hanson McNeill of McNeill’s Rangers. His aim was the destruction of an important bridge of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which was vital to the Union supply lines through western Virginia. McNeill’s idea was expanded into a two-pronged attack with wider objectives to secure supplies, raise recruits and, if possible, undermine the newly admitted Unionist state of West Virginia in Wheeling.
Jones was to attack the B & O between Grafton and Oakland, Maryland. At the same time, Brigadier-General John Daniel Imboden would lead his mixed brigade (only 700 of his 3,500 men were mounted) to link up with Jones around Grafton or Clarksburg, after capturing Beverly, Philippi, and Buckhannon. Imboden’s route led through Mount Jackson and Petersburg and along the Northwestern Turnpike.
