April 1 1863 Wednesday

Virginia Southside and North Carolina Operations – Siege of Washington

Go to April 2 1863

Arkansas. Reconnaissance to Scatterville ended.

Arkansas. Skirmishes at Clarendon and Chalk Bluff.

Mississippi. Union Major-General Ulysses Simpson Grant and Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman made a reconnaissance of the Confederate defences at Haines Bluff on the Yazoo River aboard USS Tuscumbia, with Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter. Grant concluded that any attack by that route was certain to fail at the cost of heavy casualties. He finally gave up all idea of turning the Confederate flank above or north of Vicksburg and turned his attention again to passing along the Mississippi to the south of the city. Although newspapermen, politicians, and some fellow officers doubted Grant’s capacity to conduct a successful campaign after three months of apparent paralysis up the river from the objective, the Union commander retained the confidence of the troops and of the President.

Mississippi. The USS Hartford, USS Albatross, and the ram USS Switzerland, under Rear Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, continued southwards down the Mississippi to the mouth of the Red River, destroying Confederate supply skiffs and flatboats en route. Their movement was intended to prepare for a crossing of the army at or near Grand Gulf.

Missouri. Union reconnaissance from Linden to the White River began.

Missouri. Skirmishes on the White River in Carroll County.

Nevada Territory. Orion Clemens became Acting Governor of Nevada Territory.

North Carolina. Skirmish at Rodman’s Point between Union gunboats and Confederate batteries involved in the siege of Washington.

South Carolina. Preparations for a naval assault on Charleston moved into their final week. Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont USN sent the ironclads USS Passaic, USS Montauk, USS Patapsco, and USS Keokuk from Port Royal to the North Edisto River and the gunboat USS Sebago to Calibogue Sound. Their objective was to cover the approaches to the west end of Hilton Head Island and to protect the troops operating on the Island. The ships waited about twenty miles from Charleston at Edisto Island, awaiting orders to attack the harbour. Charleston was protected by a ring of fortifications and a seven-mile channel filled with obstructions and explosive devices. The ships were prepared for action and additional armour and protective materials were added to protect the decks and surfaces.

Tennessee. Union expedition from Jackson to the Hatchie River began.

Tennessee. Union expedition began from Murfreesboro to Carthage, Lebanon, and Liberty, with the intention of destroying provisions and food supplies to avoid them being collected by Confederate forces.

Tennessee. Incidents at Eagleville and Germantown

Tennessee. Skirmish on the Columbia Pike.

Virginia. Incident at Dranesville.

Virginia. The USS Commodore Morris, Lieutenant-Commander James H Gillis, transported a detachment of soldiers from Yorktown up the Ware River to investigate reports of large grain stores in the area. Large stores were found at Patterson Smith’s plantation but, while engaged in seizing the grain, the landing party of soldiers and sailors was attacked by Confederate cavalry. The attack was repelled and the remainder of the grain destroyed. Similar forays were made to seize or destroy supplies at Byrd’s Plantation.
